A Tourist Scam in Buenos Aires

•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•

"Cambio! Cambio! ("Money Exchange" in Spanish.) Money exchange dealers yelled on the street.

「Cambio!

I was walking on the street one afternoon. There were so many guys yelling "Cambio, Cambio..." They tried their best to attract tourists' attention. One of them showed us the rate that they could offer with his smartphone. It showed 1380. Our exchange rate yesterday was 1330. Well, maybe we could take 1380 into consideration. Later, another guy came to us and used the same way to attract our attention, 1400. We thought... Wow, the Argentine peso was so fluctuating, huh? After comparing with several dealers on the street, we finally chose the guy who offered the rate of 1400. (Yes, I was greedy.)

As we went to the young man, he happily led us to a building, taking the elevator to the sixth floor. At that moment, I became alert. As the elevator door opened, the light in the building was dim, so I became more cautious and planned how I should react as any bad situation occurred in my mind.

Note: Actually, I should leave the place then, but I didn't because I had A-bou aside. My curiosity drove me forward. (I know that was pretty dangerous.)

As we entered a small room, a middle-aged guy was standing behind the wall with a small window open. He gently asked me how much I would like to exchange. I said 100 US dollars. He handed his hand to me to get my money. I didn't think further and gave him my money. Sooner or later, I saw something very awkward and stupid. He put my money into his pocket and took one dollar back to the tray, meaning that I only gave him one dollar for exchange. I was shocked that this would have ever happened to me because I only saw that online.

At the scene, I think it was so ridiculous that he tried to trick my money with such inexperienced and silly techniques. How brainless! As my money was at his hand, I clearly saw him quickly slide it down into his right pocket. Later, he gave me 1400 pesos as an exchange. I said, "No, this is incorrect." However, he insisted that I only gave him one US dollar.

You know, I have been fed up with a bunch of terrible incidents these days. Suddenly, I exploded, too. I yelled that he should not do business in this way. No matter what he said, I didn't care. What I wanted was my money BACK. "ONE HUNDRED US DOLLARS, not ONE DOLLAR." I shouted loudly. I insisted that I had given him a hundred dollars. I was so pissed off and slapped the table several times. I yelled so loud, which could be heard clearly in the hallway. I think my voice scared him because he didn't want others to know that he did business under the table. (This transaction act is prohibited by the government, I guess.) The young guy who led us to the room was shocked too. From my observation, I think he was manipulated, or you can say he might have been hired as a salesperson to hail customers on the street because when the middle-aged man behind the window said that I only gave him US$1, the young man was shocked too. He stood on my side and said "Yes, she gave you US$ 100."

Like I mentioned earlier, I was furious. I yelled so loud. I wanted everyone to know that this businessman was not honest. The young guy, on the other hand, made a gesture to beg me to lower my volume and asked me to calm down. I said, "No! I won't calm down if I don't get my US$100 BACK." The man behind the window saw that I was out of control. He finally returned my money.

I quickly grabbed my money back and held it in hand. I asked A-bou to check the photo that we took earlier to see if that was the same green bill with the same bill number. Making sure that was the right bill, we left the room quickly.

As we left the room, the young guy went with us and tried to lead us to another cambio dealer by walking down the stairs. We didn't follow him, but took the elevator instead. Actually I was terrified at that scene, but as I told you, I have had enough these days, so I released my anger all at once then.

Suddenly I felt so great after my yelling. 😏 I have to say the middle-aged man was such a poor guy to get a fierce and tough customer this time. I don't know if he successfully tricked others before. Maybe I was the first victim, or maybe he was not experienced enough. 🙄 Even though the lesson on this tour to Argentina was really harsh, I think this is going to be remembered in my whole life. We are moving to the next city. I hope everything will be back to normal very soon. Fingers crossed!🤞
