Sir Jim Ratcliffe facing transfer heartbreak as Man Utd could be gazumped to No1 target

Man Utd could be set for a major blow to their summer transfer plans as No.1 target and Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite could be swayed by interest from their rivals

Manchester United could be pipped by rivals Manchester City to their No.1 summer transfer target.

New Red Devils part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already held talks with senior figures at Old Trafford about his short list of key targets. On his wish-list is Everton youngster Jarrad Branthwaite, who has emerged this season as one of English football’s brightest talents.

Yet Ratcliffe could now be set to suffer his first transfer market heartbreak with United as noisy neighbours City look to hijack a potential move. It comes after The Mail reported City are considering a swoop for the 21-year-old defender.

Sky Sports is bringing you 500 live football games to watch, as well access to Cricket, Golf, F1, Boxing, NFL, NBA and more across eight dedicated channels. Sky Sports is the only way to watch all the action this year.

It claims City are convinced by the fact Branthwaite is still young, homegrown and shows similar traits to a young John Stones, who also made the switch to the Etihad from Everton in 2016.

Everton’s £60million asking price is likely out of United’s price range, with that figure expected to rise should he be included in England's Euro 2024 squad.

United are keen to offload a number of players this summer in order to fund their squad revamp. Red Devils chiefs were convinced that Branthwaite would not be able to turn down an Old Trafford move, but the Treble winners’ interest presents a huge blow.

Branthwaite has made six appearances for England's U21s. He earned his first senior Three Lions call-up earlier this month and was an unused substitute in the team's 1-0 defeat to Brazil on Saturday.

Speaking after his call-up, Branthwaite told Everton TV: "It’s a dream come true. To represent your national team at any level is a massive achievement, but for it to be the senior squad, I’m over the moon.

"I found out in training. The gaffer pulled me and told me I’ve been selected, so I was buzzing when I heard the news.

"I messaged my dad and he said he’s very proud of me. He said: ‘All of the family is proud', so it’s a lovely feeling. I just can’t wait to join up with the team.”
