According to Myanmar media reports, on the night of the 18th, Myanmar's official media issued a report accusing the Kachin Independence Army of lacking sincerity for peace talks. According to Myanmar's "Golden Phoenix" Chinese-language newspaper, the Kachin Independence Army has not yet signed a new agreement with the government despite participating in the peace process negotiations. On 19 November last year, the Myanmar government forces fired a shell at the Laiza Military Academy, the headquarters of the Kachin Army, killing 23 young Kachin officer cadets and injuring 20. Since then, the conflict between the two sides has increased significantly. The report pointed out that the Myanmar state radio evening news report on January 18 accused the Kachin Independence Army of not having sincerity for peace talks, undermining regional tranquility and affecting people's lives. In June 2011, armed clashes broke out between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and government forces, effectively nullifying the ceasefire agreement signed by the two sides in 1994. For more than three years, the two sides have been engaged in peace talks and occasional clashes. Myanmar's army has launched an attack on the Kachin Independence Army near the China-Myanmar border, in violation of a government ceasefire ordered on Friday (18 January). The BBC's Head in Kachin state says the Myanmar army launched mortars and artillery attacks on a hilltop near the headquarters of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) near the state capital Laiza on Sunday. Hyde witnessed hundreds of Burmese soldiers crawling through the trees on the hillside. If the Kachin headquarters fell, he said, the Burmese army would face little resistance if it tried to capture them. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced since clashes resumed 20 months ago between government forces and ethnic Kachin fighters. Conflict between Myanmar authorities and ethnic Kachin separatists resumed in 2011 after a 17-year ceasefire.

The KIA is the only major Kachin armed group that has yet to reach a ceasefire agreement with the Burmese army.

Myanmar has long had close ties with China. In recent weeks, the Myanmar army has stepped up its attacks on the Kachin Independence Army, and recent developments along the neighboring border are also raising concerns in China.

Not long ago, the Myanmar military sent warplanes to air strikes on the positions of the Kachin Independence Army, and Yingjiang County in Yunnan Province, adjacent to Myanmar, was affected.

The escalation of conflict in northern Myanmar has aroused widespread concern in the international community, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the Myanmar government on the 2nd to ensure the safety of civilians. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland urged the Burmese government and the Kachin Independence Army to cease fire and begin a peaceful dialogue. The escalation of fighting in Kachin State, which took place during the Christmas and New Year period, has cast a shadow over what should have been a peaceful and joyous atmosphere and put the Myanmar government under considerable pressure. According to Myanmar's official media "New Light of Myanmar" reported, the Myanmar government issued a news notice on the 4th pointed out that Myanmar is currently promoting the democratic process, the government hopes to achieve reconciliation with various ethnic armed groups, but the Kachin Independence Army continues to blow up roads and Bridges in the local, planted mines on the road and destroyed power supply facilities. In order to ensure the safety of people's lives and property, the government forces took military action under the circumstances of necessity.
