Old House of Siiao Family.Jiadong Village, Jiadong Township, Pingtung County / 27x12cm.watercolor
For those who grew up in Jiadong, this ancestral house is a familiar place. As a child, I often wandered through its halls and courtyards at play.
Built during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, the Xiao Family Residence is the only Hakka compound in Taiwan with a “five halls and six courtyards” layout, and is now designated as a national third-grade historic site. After achieving prosperity through trade, the Xiao ancestors commissioned craftsmen from Tangshan (mainland China) to construct the house based on the architectural style of Meixian, Guangdong, even importing the building materials from China.
After restoration, the residence still preserves spaces once used for rice milling, winemaking, and textile dyeing. To step inside is not only to see architecture, but to enter a living memory of Hakka heritage.
