The Rise of Lifestyle Diseases
As the pace of modern life accelerates and lifestyles change, residents of developed areas like Hong Kong are facing an increasing number of health challenges, particularly so-called "lifestyle diseases." These chronic non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and certain types of cancer, are closely related to our lifestyle choices.
According to data from the Hong Kong Department of Health, the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes has been steadily increasing over the past decade. These statistics reveal that cardiovascular diseases have become one of the leading causes of death in Hong Kong, and the prevalence of diabetes is also on the rise. A report by the Oriental Daily News points out that this trend is associated with increasing work stress, unhealthy dietary habits, and a lack of physical activity.
As doctors, we strongly recommend that all sectors of society pay attention to these health issues brought on by modern lifestyles and take proactive steps to change their lifestyles to combat lifestyle diseases. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government should also support this effort by implementing health education programs and increasing public sports facilities. Only through joint efforts at both the individual and societal levels can we effectively reduce the health burden caused by lifestyle diseases.
