本篇要介紹的拍號與譜號，是五線譜的基本。在閱讀五線譜時，一般要先了解其譜號與拍號，才能再往下瞭解其他訊息。

Time is indicated by means of figures placed at the commencement of a musical composition, designating the worth of the notes inside of a bar ; for instance C=4/4 or common time standing for a whole measure; the other even measures consisting of 2/4, 6/8, 12/8, 2/2, 6/4 and the odd measures of 3/4, 3/8 , 9/8, 3/2 ,5/4 time.
