設計師海心說:When I was watching the 2024 Olympic gold-metal match between Taiwan and China, I soon realized that almost every Taiwanese person was also watching - at Taipei Main Station, at sports bars, and in the homes of millions of people. But in Paris, the people supporting Taiwan were not allowed to hold the Taiwanese flag or anything related to it - and anyone who tried was attacked or shut down.
I, along millions of others, held my breath as the game between Taiwan and China got closer and closer. After a nerve-racking final round, finally, Taiwan was declared the winner. What an incredible feat, for David to win against Goliath! I jumped up and down with my roommates, who were all cheering and celebrating over this momentous victory. But again, when the medal ceremony came around, the flag raised for Taiwan was not Taiwan’s - it was only the Olympic’s symbol. Yet China was allowed to proudly raise its own flag.
Even though I do not have Taiwanese citizenship, I have come to know so many wonderful Taiwanese people, their culture, their food, and their land. I have lived here and experienced the generosity and grace of the people. Consequently, I was enraged to see that Taiwan was not allowed to be recognized by the International Olympic Committee, and that Taiwan was essentially not allowed to celebrate its victory as a nation. I wanted to create a way to resist this, this status quo and intimidation, and create a symbol of Taiwan without making it directly “Taiwan”.
For that reason, in the days following the victory, I designed these stickers - featuring Hakka-style flowers and patterns, of which is deeply embedded in Taiwanese culture. In collaboration with TGLF, a brand that represents Hakka culture here in Taiwan, I want to share these stickers with the world and for all that understand the intrinsic beauty and resilience of the Taiwan I’ve come to know. Taiwan will always be seen. And like the magnificent peonies woven into the fabric of a grandmother’s lovingly sewn clothes, Taiwan will persevere. Taiwan will continue to grow, sprout, and more than that, Taiwan will continue to #blossom its beautiful flowers for the world to see.
