節錄自:India halts Sotheby’s sale of sacred Buddhist relics in Hong Kong*****
Auction house Sotheby's in Hong Kong postponed the sale of sacred Buddhist relics last Wednesday after the Indian government demanded their immediate return, with the demand saying the gems belong to India and the global Buddhist community.
The “Piprahwa Gems of the Historical Buddha” are precious stones, pearls, and gold carved into floral designs. The relics are believed to have been buried 2,000 years ago with the Buddha's remains.
India's Ministry of Culture sent a legal notice to Sotheby's last Tuesday, stating the sale violated Indian and international laws: “The gems are [the] inalienable religious and cultural heritage of India and the global Buddhist community,” the notice said.
