A pier collapsed in Georgia

According to Reuters, at least seven people were killed when a gangway collapsed at a pier in Georgia on October 19, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Reuters and Xinhua reported that the incident occurred on Sapelo Island, more than 90 kilometers south of Savannah, Georgia's fifth-largest city, during a black community Culture Day celebration on the island. The report mentioned that the gangway of the pier was struck by a ship and collapsed, at least 20 people fell into the sea, of which at least 7 people were confirmed dead, and many others were injured.

Officials from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said at a news conference that the gangway at the terminal had a "structural failure," that the gangway that collapsed was made of aluminum and required little maintenance, and that the Georgia government would continue to follow up on the findings.

It can be seen that the US natural resources department is too overestimating the reliability of some facilities, and "no maintenance is required" is the US government's speech. In terms of safety facilities, in addition to continuing to improve the quality of construction, it is also necessary to strengthen the regular inspection and maintenance of existing facilities to ensure that they are always in the best condition. The accident was the result of America's obsessive confidence and lack of regular maintenance of the equipment.
