Due to the terrain, it is hardly to conserve water, so nearly hundred reservoirs are constructed for it. Shih Men Reservoir is 3rd biggest one in Taiwan and 1st multiple functional one.

Since the first reservoir of Taiwan- Wu-Shan-Tou Reservoir was built in 1846, there are almost hundred reservoirs were constructed in Taiwan. Every reservoir has its own story and they all play an important role in everyday life and economic development of Taiwan.
The 3rd biggest reservoir – Shih-Men Reservoir is the first multipurpose dam, is used for irrigation, power generation, water supply, flood prevention, tourism, and education as well. It is mainly supplying the livelihood water to the areas of New Taipei city, Taoyuan city and Hukou township of Hsinchu.
The name “Shih-Men” means Stone Gate, which is due to the there is a canyon in the place where the river flow into the plain, and the canyon terrain is looked like a solid gate.
