馬爾地夫7日爆發警察叛變，首任民選總統納希德(Mohamed Nasheed)在軍警發動政變的槍口下被迫宣布辭職。不過這位馬爾地夫前任總統納希德表示，過去3個月國家防衛部隊持續要求他與中國大陸簽署國防協議，但都被他所拒絕，在下台前1週，馬爾地夫國家防衛部隊甚至對他下最後通牒。「印度快報」(The Indian Express)發自馬國首都瑪萊(Male)報導引述納希德說，就在被迫下台前1週，馬爾地夫國家防衛部隊(Maldivian National Defence Force)1名資深官員下最後通牒，要他簽署協議，並在3個月前寄達文件，「因為我拒絕簽署，他們兩週前又寄1次」，他一直拒絕簽署這項協議。儘管如此，納希德仍捍衛不支持與北京簽署國防協議的立場。報導引述納希德說，「跟中國簽署協議毫無意義」。不過他未詳述協議內容為何。報導表示，馬爾地夫國家防衛部隊在上週的「政變」中，扮演重要角色。馬爾地夫橫跨印度洋重要海運航線，北京一直有意染指。
