Once, I asked her what she usually does after work.

Her answer was astonishing at first, but as I listened, it filled me with understanding and joy. I couldn’t help but want to send her blessings.

Peirong said that after work, she rides her bike to the evening market to buy groceries, then goes home to cook dinner. She ensures that when her father, brother, and sister return from work, they are greeted with a warm, home-cooked meal—just like when their mother was still alive.

Peirong’s mother had passed away after an illness.

I still remember the day she told me this. Her eyes sparkled with fragments of light as she tilted her head upward, blinking hard to force back tears, refusing to let them fall. With a tearful yet smiling expression, she said, “I can’t talk about it; I can’t mention Mom, or I won’t be able to hold back.”

She then shifted the conversation to how she started learning to cook.
