Even though negativity biases served a purpose for humans and may still in some situations, they can be harmful when they become extreme. For instance, if parents' sensitivity to their children's problems extends beyond their early child-hood, it's a recipe for teenage drama. Are you done with your homework? What happened to your face? Why don't you exercise more? And because these biases may be hardwired, merely being aware of them can't always help us avoid falling prey to their more harmful incarnations. Still, we aren't entirely powerless. There are ways we can counteract the negativity bias. Here are two possible strategies, one in the context of making wrong choices because of loss aversion, and the other in the context of the endowment effect.
