After our river cruise, we wanted to have dinner nearby, so we went to Anantara, where we had dinner right by the river under the shade of a big tree! We saw that they had serviced apartments and briefly harbored a fantasy of buying one and moving there (a la Greg in White Lotus.. except we’re not murderers on the run haha)… Then we noticed it had no river views and no windows to speak of… So… No… The meal was nice though and Anantara was lovely.
Baba & I finally managed to try our 1st Michelin recommended restaurant in Chiang Mai. Baan Suan Mae Rim is marked with ฿฿. Having just been to a Michelin recommended restaurant (a gastropub) in the Cotswold last night marked with ££ whilst listening to Baba complain the whole time about how he was eating air at a ridiculous price, there is a world of difference… Here Baba looks relaxed, probably because he’s not worrying about the bill or going home on an empty stomach… We had curry soup with sea snails (featured below), deep-fried serpent fish, salty egg yolk noodles, longan sticky rice, water... I was very full, bill = hkd 141 (compared to last night’s bill of hkd 400 for 2 tiny dishes and 2 slices of bread…) Perhaps the settings were metaphors for Baba’s reactions: We dined next to a tranquil pond in Chiang Mai, whilst we dined next to a roaring fire… I read on reddit that the Michelin guide is much more useful in Asia, which may be the case.. Although I still intend to drag Baba out from time to time to check out the UK ones… (Shhhh….)
After going to the Insect zoo, we decided to stop at a nearby boutique hotel, Cools Down resort. There were no guests to be seen, but luckily the restaurant was open, serving my favourite pork crackling and in big portions too! I'm not the only one with good taste (see below!) Another thing the kids couldn't resist was splashing in the pool (neither could I), especially in the hot weather.
