台灣因地形難以續留雨水,已興建近百座水庫,第三大水庫石門水庫,是台灣第一座多功能水庫。Due to the terrain, it is hardly to conserve water, so nearly hundred reservoirs are constructed for it. Shih Men Reservoir is 3rd biggest one in Taiwan and 1st multiple functional one.
Taiwan is surrounded by sea; however, it is always a challenge to efficiently manage our water resources. The rivers among mountains are short and turbulent due to the terrain, it's hardly to conserve the water even the rainy season brings abundant water in Taiwan.
Since the first reservoir of Taiwan- Wu-Shan-Tou Reservoir was built in 1846, there are almost hundred reservoirs were constructed in Taiwan. Every reservoir has its own story and they all play an important role in everyday life and economic development of Taiwan.
The 3rd biggest reservoir – Shih-Men Reservoir is the first multipurpose dam, is used for irrigation, power generation, water supply, flood prevention, tourism, and education as well. It is mainly supplying the livelihood water to the areas of New Taipei city, Taoyuan city and Hukou township of Hsinchu.
The name “Shih-Men” means Stone Gate, which is due to the there is a canyon in the place where the river flow into the plain, and the canyon terrain is looked like a solid gate.
Shihmen is famous of the fish dishes, and yes, fishes from this artificial lake. It attracts many tourists or foodie every weekends. Actually, Shihmen reservoir is also a nice recreation area and scenic spot for all ages. There are parks, hiking trails, bicycle path and lake cruise. The area is huge which may take whole day to walk around. During typhoon season, people come to magnificent flood discharge from the top of the dam; while during fall/winter, here is a great spot to enjoy the maples and plum blossoms views.

※ The highest ticket office is one-way road, only for entering and need to exit from other ricket office.
