snowbird，是一種暱稱「雪鳥」，北美大陸的遷徙候鳥。當寒冬來臨，大半個北美會出現成群的雪鳥，牠們來此過冬。
順帶一提，在北美大陸北部寒冷地區（如加拿大）有一類族群會季節性地遷徙到南方溫暖地區過冬，像是美國陽光地帶、墨西哥，甚至更南方的加勒比海地區。這些人被稱為「雪鳥族」，早期主要是退休人士或年長老人，但是現在也加入其他年齡層的人。著名的雪鳥族目的地包括美國加州和佛羅里達州，這些地方亦有關注雪鳥族的現象，透過露營營地的提供等來吸引雪鳥族給當地帶來經濟活力。
mantle，是披風、斗篷的意思，引申為覆蓋、籠罩或帳幕、帷幕之意，比方夜幕的英文說法是 mantle of night。
coat，原本是外套的意思，在此表示（植物的）表皮或（動物的）皮毛。
