'Gen Z' protesters lead global wave of generational discontent
From the Andes to the Himalayas, a new wave of protests is unfolding across the world, driven by generational discontent against governments and anger among young people.
In Nepal, youth protests against a ban on major social media platforms, coupled with long-simmering anger over corruption, escalated dramatically on September 8.
The movement toppled Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli's government, forced the dissolution of parliament, and led to the reversal of the social media ban.
Meanwhile, in the South American nation of Peru, youth demonstrations began on September 20 after the government announced reforms to a pension law. The protests then swelled to wider calls to stamp out corruption, repression and rising crime under President Dina Boluarte’s rule.
In Morocco, a leaderless collective called Gen Z 212 — named after Morocco’s dialing code — has taken to the streets to demand better public services and increased spending on health and education.
Last week, Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina was forced out of power and out of the country after a military mutiny, the culmination of weeks of demonstrations led by young protesters referring to themselves as “Gen Z Madagascar.”
The spark differs by country, but the kindling is the same: Stagnant prospects for young people, widening inequality, and a daily feed of elite privilege on Gen Z's phone screens.
Across multiple countries, a singular pop culture symbol has also emerged: a black flag showing a grinning skull and crossbones wearing a straw hat.
The flag comes from a long-running Japanese anime and manga series called One Piece, about a rag-tag band of pirates dubbed "the straw hats," who are led by a cheerful character named Monkey D. Luffy and are fighting an oppressive world government.
