The nation is famed for its Māori culture and dramatic scenery, including glaciers, mountains, volcanoes and lakes. But its location in the South Pacific and associated long-distance air fares have often posed a barrier for visitors.

Some 60 destinations around the world, nearly all of the places with these tourist taxes say that the fee is necessary to offset the congestion, environmental damage and other side effects of overtourism.
