After living in the UK for a year and a half, I've picked up on the little things that truly make up daily life here.
Here are 6 phrases I hear all the time — feel free to comment and share your most unforgettable British memories too!
- 🛒 "Clubcard accepted."
🗣 Where you'll hear it: at the Tesco checkout counter
📍 It sounds like a casual reminder, but what it really means is, "If you don’t scan your Clubcard, get ready to pay more!"
👉 Flashing your Clubcard at every checkout becomes second nature — a true rite of passage for every student living in the UK.
- 🚇 "Mind the gap."
🗣 Where you'll hear it: Tube station announcements
📍 Probably the most iconic phrase in all of London. While it’s technically warning you to watch your step, it also feels like a gentle reminder about life’s little gaps and transitions.
- 👮♂️ "See it. Say it. Sorted."
🗣 Where you'll hear it: on trains, at train stations, and Tube stations
📍 The British version of a public safety slogan. You’ll hear it constantly, encouraging people to report unattended bags or suspicious behaviour.
😂 Only the Brits can make anti-terror messaging sound so calm, polite, and oddly reassuring.
- 🍽 "Still or sparkling?"
🗣 Where you'll hear it: When ordering at restaurants
📍 Waitstaff often ask this as soon as you sit down. If you’re trying to save money, remember to ask for tap water instead — still and sparkling usually mean you’ll get a pricey bottled option!
- ☕ "Tea?"
🗣 Where you'll hear it: Literally anywhere, anytime
📍 Tea is Britain’s answer to everything — feeling sad? Tea. Pre-meeting prep? Tea. A random afternoon? Tea.
👉 If someone asks "Tea?", it’s probably just because they want one themselves — but it’s always polite to say yes!
- 🗣 "You alright?"
🗣 Where you'll hear it: on the street, in shops, cafes, or at school
📍 They’re not actually asking about your wellbeing — it’s just the British version of "Hi, how are you?"
👉 Pro tip: You don’t have to give a full answer. Just smile and reply, "Yeah, you alright?" right back!
