Now it so happened that in those days, when gallant knights were always seeking adventures, King Arthur's only son, a very valiant Prince, begged of his father a large sum of money to enable him to journey to Wales, and there strive to set free a certain beautiful lady who was possessed by seven evil spirits. In vain the King denied him; so at last he gave way and the Prince set out with two horses, one of which he rode, the other laden with gold pieces. Now after some days' journey the Prince came to a market-town in Wales where there was a great commotion. On asking the reason for it he was told that, according to law, the corpse of a very generous man had been arrested on its way to the grave, because, in life, it had owed large sums to the money-lenders.

Tī hit ê sî-tāi, khî-sū in lóng sì-kè teh cháu-chhōe mō͘-hiám ê ki-hōe, Ông Á-sò ê ko͘-kiáⁿ, sī 1 ê ū-kàu ióng-kám ê Ông-chú, i khì pài-thok in lāu-pē hō͘ i 1 tōa tiâu chîⁿ, thang hō͘ i khí-thêng khì Óe-o̍͘h-suh, kái-kiù 1 ê khì hō͘ 7 ê siâ-lêng hù-sin ê bí-lē lú-sū. Ông án-chóaⁿ ka kū-choa̍t lóng bô-chhái-kang, bóe--á ū lo̍h-nńg, Ông-chú to̍h khan 2 chiah bé-á khí-kiâⁿ--ā, 1 chiah sī ka-tī beh khiâ, 1 chiah sī chài kui chài ê kim-pè. Keng-kòe kúi kang-á ê lú-hêng liáu-āu, Ông-chú lâng lâi kàu 1 ê in-ūi kiat-chhī heng--khí-lâi ê chng, chng--ni̍h tng-teh hoán-hōa. I khì mn̄g kóng sī án-chóaⁿ ē án-ne, lâng ka kóng, ū 1 ê chāi-seⁿ ê sî chin khóng-khài ê lâng, i ê sí-thé tī beh kng khì tâi ê lō͘--ni̍h hông khàu-ah, kóng sī in-ūi i chāi-seⁿ ê sî, koh khiàm chè-chú kài chē chîⁿ bô hêng.

"That is a cruel law," said the young Prince. "Go, bury the dead in peace, and let the creditors come to my lodgings; I will pay the debts of the dead."

“Chit tiâu hoat-lu̍t ū-iáⁿ khok-hêng.” Siàu-liân ê Ông-chú án-ne kóng, koh kóng: “Khì--lah, khì kā óng-seng ê lâng an-thó͘, chiah kiò hia ê chè-chú lâi góa tòa ê só͘-chāi, i khiàm--ê, góa chhē.”

So the creditors came, but they were so numerous that by evening the Prince had but twopence left for himself, and could not go further on his journey.

Só͘-pái,hit kóa債主to̍h lóng來--ā,m̄-koh債主實在是siuⁿ chē,到beh暗á,王子手頭總--ê共--ê soah chhun 2 sián,已經無才調koh繼續旅行--ā。

Só͘-pái, hit kóa chè-chú to̍h lóng lâi--ah, m̄-koh chè-chú si̍t-chāi sī siuⁿ chē, kàu beh-àm-á, Ông-chú chhiú-thâu chóng--ê kiōng--ê soah chhun 2 sián, í-keng bô châi-tiāu koh kè-sio̍k lú-hêng--ā.

Now it so happened that Jack the Giant-Killer on his way to Wales passed through the town, and, hearing of the Prince's plight, was so taken with his kindness and generosity that he determined to be the Prince's servant. So this was agreed upon, and next morning, after Jack had paid the reckoning with his last farthing, the two set out together. But as they were leaving the town, an old woman ran after the Prince and called out, "Justice! Justice! The dead man owed me twopence these seven years. Pay me as well as the others."

In 2 ê sûi講sûi鬥tah,隔轉工ê透早,Jia̍k kā siàu la̍p了,tú好kui seng-khu khêng kah ta-ta-ta,sòa--lòe,in to̍h做夥chiūⁿ路。M̄-koh to̍h tī in beh離開庄頭ê時,有1 ê老阿婆jiok tī王子ê kha-chiah後hoah講:「Ài公道!Ài正義!

Tú-hó Kū-jîn Sat-chhiú Jia̍k mā tī beh khì Óe-o̍͘h-suh ê lō͘--ni̍h keng-kòe chit chng, ū thiaⁿ tio̍h Ông-chú tú-tio̍h khùn-lân, mā khì hō͘ Ông-chú ê siān-liông kah khóng-khài kám-tōng, koat-sim beh chò Ông-chú ê kin-lâng. In 2 ê sûi káng sûi tàu-tah, keh-tńg-kang ê thàu-chá, Jia̍k kā siàu la̍p liáu, tú-hó kui seng-khu khêng kah ta-ta-ta, sòa--lòe, in to̍h chò-hóe chiūⁿ-lō͘. M̄-koh to̍h tī in beh lī-khui chng-thâu ê sî, ū 1 ê lāu a-pô jiok tī Ông-chú ê kha-chiah āu hoah kóng: “Ài kong-tō! Ài chèng-gī! Hit ê óng-seng--ê 7 tang í-lâi mā khiàm góa 2 sián chîⁿ neh. Lí to̍h ài chhin-chhiūⁿ lí tùi-thāi pa̍t-lâng án-ne, kā chîⁿ hêng--góa.”

And the Prince, kind and generous, put his hand to his pocket and gave the old woman the twopence that was left to him. So now they had not a penny between them, and when the sun grew low the Prince said:

Ah che王子to̍h是好心koh慷慨,伊kā手chhun入去伊ê lak袋á,kā伊siōng尾ê 2 sián錢mā jîm hō͘老阿婆。Taⁿ,in 2 ê人連半sián錢to無--ā,tī日頭jú來jú低,beh暗á ê時,王子講:

Ah che Ông-chú to̍h sī hó-sim koh khóng-khài, i kā chhiú chhun ji̍p-khì i ê lak-tē-á, kā i siōng-bóe ê 2 sián chîⁿ mā jîm hō͘ lāu a-pô. Taⁿ, in 2 ê lâng liân pòaⁿ sián chîⁿ to bô--ā, tī ji̍t-thâu jú lâi jú kē, beh-àm-á ê sî, Ông-chú kóng:

"Jack! Since we have no money, how are we to get a night's lodging?"

“Jia̍k! Kah lán 2 ê lóng tē-pōng-chí--ah, lán beh án-chóaⁿ chhōe só͘-chāi kòe-mê?”

Then Jack replied, "We shall do well enough, Master; for within two or three miles of this place there lives a huge and monstrous giant with three heads, who can fight four hundred men in armour and make them fly from him like chaff before the wind."

離chia 2,3英里ê所在,有1 ê大叢koh恐怖ê 3粒頭巨人tòa tī hia,伊ē-tàng kah 400 ê穿戰甲ê兵á sio戰,koh ē-tàng kā in phah kah bē輸米糠隨風iāⁿ-iāⁿ飛。」

Jia̍k ìn kóng: “Chú-lâng, an--lah, lán it-tēng ū châi-tiāu èng-hù. Lī chia 2, 3 eng-lí ê só͘-chāi, ū 1 ê tōa-châng koh khióng-pò͘ ê 3 lia̍p thâu kū-jîn tòa tī hia, i ē-tàng kah 400 ê chhēng chiàn-kah ê peng-á sio-chiàn, koh ē-tàng kā in phah kah bē-su bí-khng sûi hong iāⁿ-iāⁿ-poe.”

"And what good will that be to us?" quoth the Prince. "He will for sure chop us up in a mouthful."

王子講了koh繼續問講:「伊soah bē 1嘴to̍h kā咱2 ê pō͘ kah碎鹽鹽?」

“Ah án-ne sī tùi lán ū siáⁿ-mih hó-chhù?” Ông-chú kóng liáu koh kè-sio̍k mn̄g kóng: “I soah bē 1 chhùi to̍h kā lán 2 ê pō͘ kah chhùi-iâm-iâm?”

"Nay," said Jack, laughing. "Let me go and prepare the way for you. By all accounts this giant is a dolt. Mayhap I may manage better than that."

「Bē--lah。」

“Bē--lah.” Jia̍k chhiò-chhiò-á ka ìn, koh kóng: “Góa seng khì--lah, lō͘ góa lâi thè lí khui. Ta̍k-ê lóng kóng chit ê kū-jîn sī 1 ê giàn-thâu. Hoān-sè góa ē-tàng chhú-lí--ê, ē pí góa pún-té siūⁿ--ê koh-khah chē.”

So the Prince remained where he was, and Jack pricked his steed at full speed till he came to the giant's castle, at the gate of which he knocked so loud that he made the neighbouring hills resound.

Só͘-pái王子to̍h留tī本底ê所在,Jia̍k是kā伊馬á ê速度chhui kah盡磅,直透到巨人ê城堡,伊kā城堡ê大門lòng kah pìn-piàng叫有夠大聲,大聲kah連附近ê山脈to teh īn。

Só͘-pái Ông-chú to̍h lâu tī pún-té ê só͘-chāi, Jia̍k sī kā i bé-á ê sok-tō͘ chhui kah chīn-pōng, ti̍t-thàu kàu kū-jîn ê siâⁿ-pó, i kā siâⁿ-pó ê tōa-mn̂g lòng kah pìn-piàng-kiò ū-kàu tōa-siaⁿ, tōa-siaⁿ kah liân hù-kīn ê soaⁿ-me̍h to teh īn.

On this the giant roared from within in a voice like thunder:

巨人聽--tio̍h,bē輸teh tân雷公án-ne phngh講:

Kū-jîn thiaⁿ--tio̍h, bē-su teh tân-lûi-kong án-ne phngh kóng:

"Who's there?"

「是siáng?」

“Sī siáng?”

Then said Jack as bold as brass, "None but your poor cousin Jack."

Jia̍k ê táⁿ khah-tōa leh pn̄g-khaⁿ, ìn kóng: “Koh ū siáng? Lí khó͘-liân ê piáu-sè--ê, Jia̍k--lah.”

"Cousin Jack!" quoth the giant, astounded. "And what news with my poor cousin Jack?" For, see you, he was quite taken aback; so Jack made haste to reassure him.

「表細--ê,Jia̍k!」巨人chhoah-1-tiô,koh問講:「我苦憐ê表細--ê Jia̍k,你有啥消息beh講?」Aih,你ka看,che巨人koh有影tio̍h驚--a neh,só͘-pái Jia̍k ûn-ná mā to̍h趕緊ka an-tah。

“Piáu-sè--ê, Jia̍k!” Kū-jîn chhoah-1-tiô, koh mn̄g kóng: “Góa khó͘-liân ê piáu-sè--ê Jia̍k, lí ū sáⁿ siau-sit beh kóng?” Aih, lí ka khòaⁿ, che kū-jîn koh ū-iáⁿ tio̍h-kiaⁿ--a neh, só͘-pái Jia̍k ûn-ná mā to̍h kóaⁿ-kín ka an-tah.

"Dear coz, heavy news, God wot!"

Ah!天公伯--á!」

“Piáu-tōa--ê, tîm-tāng ê siau-sit--lah! Ah! Thiⁿ-kong-peh--á!”

"Heavy news," echoed the giant, half afraid. "God wot, no heavy news can come to me. Have I not three heads? Can I not fight five hundred men in armour? Can I not make them fly like chaff before the wind?"

我kám m̄是ē-tàng kā in phah kah bē輸米糠隨風iāⁿ-iāⁿ飛?」

“Tîm-tāng ê siau-sit--o͘h?” Kū-jîn sim-lāi kiaⁿ-kiaⁿ, ná ka-lēng sūn Jia̍k ê ōe-bóe ìn, koh kóng: “Thiⁿ-kong-peh--á kòa-pó-chèng, bē ū siáⁿ tîm-tāng ê siau-sit beh lâi chhōe--góa-lah. Góa kám m̄ sī ū 3 lia̍p thâu? Góa kám m̄ sī ē-tàng 1 lâng tèng 500 ê chhēng chiàn-kah ê ióng-sū? Góa kám m̄ sī ē-tàng kā in phah kah bē-su bí-khng sûi hong iāⁿ-iāⁿ-poe?”

"True," replied crafty Jack, "but I came to warn you because the great King Arthur's son with a thousand men in armour is on his way to kill you."

狡khiat ê Jia̍k án-ne ìn,koh講:「M̄-koh我是beh來kā你警告講,hit ê偉大ê王Á-sò in kiáⁿ,chhōa 1000 ê穿戰甲ê勇士,tng teh ùi chia來beh hō͘你死!」

“Bô chhò! Kui châng hó-hó!” Káu-khiat ê Jia̍k án-ne ìn, koh kóng: “M̄-koh góa sī beh lâi kā lí kéng-kò kóng, hit ê úi-tāi ê Ông Á-sò in kiáⁿ, chhōa 1000 ê chhēng chiàn-kah ê ióng-sū, tng teh ùi chia lâi beh hō͘ lí sí!”

At this the giant began to shiver and to shake. "Ah! Cousin Jack! Kind cousin Jack! This is heavy news indeed," quoth he. "Tell me, what am I to do?"

聽到chia來,巨人驚kah gi̍h-gi̍h-chùn,phi̍h-phi̍h-chhoah。「Ah!

Thiaⁿ kàu chia lâi, kū-jîn kiaⁿ kah gi̍h-gi̍h-chùn, phi̍h-phi̍h-chhoah. “Ah! Piáu-sè--ê Jia̍k! Hó-sim ê piáu-sè--ê Jia̍k! Che ū-iáⁿ sī pháiⁿ siau-sit--lah!” Koh kóng: “Kín kă kóng, góa ài án-chóaⁿ chò?”

"Hide yourself in the vault," says crafty Jack, "and I will lock and bolt and bar you in; and keep the key till the Prince has gone. So you will be safe."

“Lí bih khì tē-hām,” Káu-khiat ê Jia̍k chiap leh kóng: “Sòa--lòe, góa ē kā mn̂g só--khài, koh kā mn̂g-chhòaⁿ chhòaⁿ kah ăn-ân, só-sî góa ē sûi-sin pó-koán, it-ti̍t kàu Ông-chú lī-khui. Án-ne to̍h pó-chèng lí an-choân.”

Then the giant made haste and ran down into the vault, and Jack locked, and bolted, and barred him in. Then being thus secure, he went and fetched his master, and the two made themselves heartily merry over what the giant was to have had for supper, while the miserable monster shivered and shook with fright in the underground vault.

來he巨人hiong-hiong狂狂走入去地陷,Jia̍k to̍h鎖門,chhòaⁿ門,kā巨人關tiâu-tiâu。確定tāi-chì lóng妥當了後,Jia̍k to̍h去kā伊ê主人接--過-來,2 ê人歡喜樂暢去享受本底巨人chhoân好beh食ê暗頓,ah hit ê悲慘ê怪物--leh,猶原tī地陷--ni̍h驚kah gi̍h-gi̍h-chùn,phi̍h-phi̍h-chhoah。

Lâi he kū-jîn hiong-hiong-kông-kông cháu ji̍p-khì tē-hām, Jia̍k to̍h só-mn̂g, chhòaⁿ-mn̂g, kā kū-jîn koaiⁿ tiâu-tiâu. Khak-tēng tāi-chì lóng thò-tòng liáu-āu, Jia̍k to̍h khì kā i ê chú-lâng chiap--kòe-lâi, 2 ê lâng hoaⁿ-hí-lo̍k-thiòng khì hiáng-siū pún-té kū-jîn chhoân hó beh chia̍h ê àm-tǹg, ah hit ê pi-chhám ê koài-bu̍t--leh, iû-goân tī tē-hām--ni̍h kiaⁿ kah gi̍h-gi̍h-chùn, phi̍h-phi̍h-chhoah.

Well, after a good night's rest Jack woke his master in early morn, and having furnished him well with gold and silver from the giant's treasure, bade him ride three miles forward on his journey. So when Jack judged that the Prince was pretty well out of the smell of the giant, he took the key and let his prisoner out. He was half dead with cold and damp, but very grateful; and he begged Jack to let him know what he would be given as a reward for saving the giant's life and castle from destruction, and he should have it.

To̍h án-ne,好好á歇1暝了後,Jia̍k透早to̍h去kā伊ê主人叫--起-來,koh ùi巨人ê寶庫內底the̍h bē少ê黃金白銀,kā伊ê錢袋á袋kah tīⁿ-tīⁿ,吩咐主人tio̍h ài先起程向前騎3英里ê遠。 巨人身軀tâm-lok-lok,寒kah半小死,m̄-koh伊mā是有夠感謝Jia̍k án-ne來救伊kah伊ê城堡,伊拜托Jia̍k to̍h ài kā伊講,ài hō͘伊啥物貨做報賞,khah án-chóaⁿ講,Jia̍k mā應該ài得tio̍h chit ê報賞。

To̍h án-ne, hó-hó-á hioh 1 mê liáu-āu, Jia̍k thàu-chá to̍h khì kā i ê chú-lâng kiò--khí-lâi, koh ùi kū-jîn ê pó-khò͘ lāi-té the̍h bē chió ê n̂g-kim pe̍h-gîn, kā i ê chîⁿ-tē-á tē kah tīⁿ-tīⁿ, hoan-hù chú-lâng tio̍h ài seng khí-thêng hiòng-chêng khiâ 3 eng-lí ê hn̄g. Tī Jia̍k khak-tēng kū-jîn í-keng phīⁿ bē tio̍h Ông-chú ê bī liáu-āu, i to̍h the̍h só-sî kā i ê hoān-lâng pàng--chhut-lâi. Kū-jîn seng-khu tâm-lok-lok, kôaⁿ kah pòaⁿ-sió-sí, m̄-koh i mā sī ū-kàu kám-siā Jia̍k án-ne lâi kiù i kah i ê siâⁿ-pó, i pài-thok Jia̍k to̍h ài kā i kóng, ài hō͘ i siáⁿ-mih-hòe chò pò-siúⁿ, khah án-chóaⁿ kóng, Jia̍k mā èng-kai ài tit-tio̍h chit ê pò-siúⁿ.

"You're very welcome," said Jack, who always had his eyes about him. "All I want is the old coat and cap, together with the rusty old sword and slippers which are at your bed-head."

「真正免細jī--lah,」Jia̍k án-ne ka ìn,soah m̄知影伊ê目色一直lóng真好,to̍h講:「我kan-na想beh ài khǹg tī你眠床頭ê hit領舊裘á kah帽á,koh有hit kháu seⁿ-sian-liù-phí ê舊劍hâm hit雙su-lí-pah to̍h ē-sái。」

“Chin-chiàⁿ bián sè-jī--lah,” Jia̍k án-ne ka ìn, soah m̄ chai-iáⁿ i ê ba̍k-sek it-ti̍t lóng chin hó, to̍h kóng: “Góa kan-na siūⁿ-beh ài khǹg tī lí bîn-chhn̂g-thâu ê hit niá kū hiû-á kah bō-á, koh ū hit kháu seⁿ-sian-liù-phí ê kū kiàm hâm hit siang su-lí-pah to̍h ē-sái.”

When the giant heard this he sighed and shook his head. "You don't know what you are asking," quoth he. "They are the most precious things I possess, but as I have promised, you must have them. The coat will make you invisible, the cap will tell you all you want to know, the sword will cut asunder whatever you strike, and the slippers will take you wherever you want to go in the twinkling of an eye!"

巨人聽伊講了,thó͘ 1口大氣,頭hàiⁿ-hàiⁿ--leh講:「你m̄知影你teh討--ê是啥物,」koh講:「he是我手頭siāng要緊ê物,m̄-koh我to̍h承諾--ah,你to̍h應當the̍h。He裘á ē kā你變無khoàiⁿ,帽á ē kā你想beh知--ê lóng講hō͘你知,hit kháu劍nā phut--lòe啥to̍h ài斷,su-lí-pah是不管你想beh去toe̍h,目nih-á伊to̍h ē chhōa你kah到。」

Kū-jîn thiaⁿ i kóng liáu, thó͘ 1 kháu tōa-khùi, thâu hàiⁿ-hàiⁿ--leh kóng: “Lí m̄ chai-iáⁿ lí teh thó--ê sī siáⁿ-mi̍h,” koh kóng: “He sī góa chhiú-thâu siāng iàu-kín ê mi̍h, m̄-koh góa to̍h sêng-lo̍k--ah, lí to̍h èng-tong the̍h. He hiû-á ē kā lí piàn bô-khoàiⁿ, bō-á ē kā lí siūⁿ-beh chai--ê lóng kóng hō͘ lí chai, hit kháu kiàm nā phut--lòe siáⁿ to̍h ài tn̄g, su-lí-pah sī put-koán lí siūⁿ-beh khì toe̍h, ba̍k-nih-á i to̍h ē chhōa lí kah kàu.”

So Jack, overjoyed, rode away with the coat and cap, the sword and the slippers, and soon overtook his master; and they rode on together until they reached the castle where the beautiful lady lived whom the Prince sought.

Jia̍k thiòng kah kiōng-beh peh起來跳,伊kā裘á,帽á,劍kah su-lí-pah chah-chah--leh,to̍h騎馬離開,kài緊to̍h jiok tio̍h伊ê主人。In to̍h做陣騎到城堡,hit棟王子beh走chhōe ê美麗女士所tòa ê城堡。

Jia̍k thiòng kah kiōng-beh peh khí-lâi thiàu, i kā hiû-á, bō-á, kiàm kah su-lí-pah chah-chah--leh, to̍h khiâ bé lī-khui, kài kín to̍h jiok tio̍h i ê chú-lâng. In to̍h chò-tīn khiâ kàu siâⁿ-pó, hit tòng Ông-chú beh cháu-chhōe ê bí-lē lú-sū só͘ tòa ê siâⁿ-pó.

Now she was very beautiful, for all she was possessed of seven devils, and when she heard the Prince sought her as a suitor, she smiled and ordered a splendid banquet to be prepared for his reception. And she sate on his right hand, and plied him with food and drink.

To̍h sǹg-kóng sī khì hō͘ 7 ê ok-mô͘ hù-sin, chit ê lú-sū iû-goân sī ū-kàu súi--ê. I thiaⁿ tio̍h Ông-chú siūⁿ-beh jiok--i ê sî, i chhiò-chhiò--á, hoan-hù kóng ài chún-pī phang-phài ê chiú-toh kā Ông-chú lo̍h-bé sé-tîn. I chē tī Ông-chú ê chiàⁿ-chhiú-pêng, ti̍t-ti̍t ka su-hāu hó chiú hó chhài.

And when the repast was over she took out her own handkerchief and wiped his lips gently, and said, with a smile:

酒筵結束ê時,伊the̍h ka-tī ê手巾á,好禮á kā王子ê嘴chhit-chhit--leh,koh笑--1-ē,講:

Chiú-iân kiat-sok ê sî, i the̍h ka-tī ê chhiú-kin-á, hó-lé-á kā Ông-chú ê chhùi chhit-chhit--leh, koh chhiò--1-ē, kóng:

"I have a task for you, my lord! You must show me that kerchief to-morrow morning or lose your head."

你mî-á-chài早起一定ài kā chit條手巾á the̍h hō͘我看,nā無你ê頭to̍h ē無--去。」

“Ông-chú tāi-jîn, góa ū 1 ê jīm-bū ài kau-tài hō͘--lí! Lí mî-á-chài chái-khí it-tēng ài kā chit tiâu chhiú-kin-á the̍h hō͘ góa khòaⁿ, nā bô lí ê thâu to̍h ē bô--khì.”

And with that she put the handkerchief in her bosom and said, "Good-night!"

Sòa--lòe,伊to̍h kā手巾á seh入去伊胸前,講:「晚安!」

Sòa--lòe, i to̍h kā chhiú-kin-á seh ji̍p-khì i heng-chêng, kóng: “Boán-an!”

The Prince was in despair, but Jack said nothing till his master was in bed. Then he put on the old cap he had got from the giant, and lo! in a minute he knew all that he wanted to know. So, in the dead of the night, when the beautiful lady called on one of her familiar spirits to carry her to Lucifer himself, Jack was beforehand with her, and putting on his coat of darkness and his slippers of swiftness, was there as soon as she was. And when she gave the handkerchief to the Devil, bidding him keep it safe, and he put it away on a high shelf, Jack just up and nipped it away in a trice!

王子感覺無望--ā,m̄-koh Jia̍k siáⁿ to無講,to̍h án-ne一直到伊ê主人去睏。Sòa--lòe,伊to̍h kā ùi巨人hia the̍h--tio̍h ê舊帽á tì--起-來,o͘h!Chiah 1目sut-á,伊想beh知--ê to̍h lóng知--a。Só͘-pái,tī 三更暝半,hit ê美麗ê女士召喚其中1 ê伊熟似ê邪靈chhōa伊去Lú-so̍h-fò hia ê時,Jia̍k to̍h緊伊1步,kā伊ê隱身裘á kah緊猛su-lí-pah穿--leh,kah女士siâng時到tè。Koh來女士to̍h kā手巾á交hō͘惡魔,吩咐惡魔to̍h ài ka顧ho͘好,等到惡魔kā手巾á khǹg去1 ê koân格á téng ê時,Jia̍k sûi to̍h跳--起-來,1-ē手to̍h kā手巾á剪--去-ah!

Ông-chú kám-kak bô-bāng--ā, m̄-koh Jia̍k siáⁿ to bô kóng, to̍h án-ne it-ti̍t kàu i ê chú-lâng khì khùn. Sòa--lòe, i to̍h kā ùi kū-jîn hia the̍h--tio̍h ê kū bō-á tì--khí-lâi, o͘h! Chiah 1-ba̍k-sut-á, i siūⁿ-beh chai--ê to̍h lóng chai--a. Só͘-pái, tī saⁿ-keⁿ-mî-pòaⁿ, hit ê bí-lē ê lú-sū tiàu-hoàn kî-tiong 1 ê i se̍k-sāi ê siâ-lêng chhōa i khì Lú-so̍h-fò hia ê sî, Jia̍k to̍h kín i 1 pō͘, kā i ê ún-sin hiû-á kah kín-mé su-lí-pah chhēng--leh, kah lú-sū siâng-sî kàu tè. Koh-lâi lú-sū to̍h kā chhiú-kin-á kau hō͘ ok-mô͘, hoan-hù ok-mô͘ to̍h ài ka kò͘ ho͘ hó, tán kàu ok-mô͘ kā chhiú-kin-á khǹg khì 1 ê koân keh-á téng ê sî, Jia̍k sûi to̍h thiàu--khí-lâi, 1-ē-chhiú to̍h kā chhiú-kin-á chián--khì-ah!

So the next morning, when the beauteous enchanted lady looked to see the Prince crestfallen, he just made a fine bow and presented her with the handkerchief.

Só͘-pái keh-tńg-kang chái-khí, tī hit ê khì hō͘ mô͘-hoat bê--khì ê bí-lē lú-sū kî-thāi beh khòaⁿ tio̍h Ông-chú sit-sîn-sòng-chì ê sî, Ông-chú soah kan-na chin bûn-lí kā i kiok-kiong, lâi to̍h kā chhiú-kin-á hiàn khí-lih hō͘--i.

At first she was terribly disappointed, but, as the day drew on, she ordered another and still more splendid repast to be got ready. And this time, when the repast was over, she kissed the Prince full on the lips and said:

Chhím頭伊實在有夠失望,m̄-koh, tī hit日khah òaⁿ ê時,伊to̍h吩咐ài辦1場koh khah phang-phài ê筵席。

Chhím-thâu i si̍t-chāi ū-kàu sit-bōng, m̄-koh, tī hit ji̍t khah òaⁿ ê sî, i to̍h hoan-hù ài pān 1 tiûⁿ koh khah phang-phài ê iân-sia̍h. Chit piàn, chiú-toh soah ê sî, i chhùi-tú-chhùi kā Ông-chú khì-suh--lo̍h-khì, koh kóng:

"I have a task for you, my lover. Show me to-morrow morning the last lips I kiss to-night or you lose your head."

Mî-á-chài早起ài hō͘我看tio̍h我kim暗siāng尾á khì-suh--過ê嘴唇,nā無你ê頭to̍h ē無--去。」

“Sim-ài--ê, góa ū 1 ê jīm-bū beh kau-tài hō͘--lí. Mî-á-chài chái-khí ài hō͘ góa khòaⁿ-tio̍h góa kim-àm siāng-bóe-á khì-suh--kòe ê chhùi-tûn, nā bô lí ê thâu to̍h ē bô--khì.”

Then the Prince, who by this time was head over ears in love, said tenderly, "If you will kiss none but mine, I will." Now the beauteous lady, for all she was possessed by seven devils, could not but see that the Prince was a very handsome young man; so she blushed a little, and said:

Chit時,王子已經是愛--著khah慘死,溫柔kā伊ìn講:「Nā準講你kan-na beh chim我1 ê,我o.k.。」Sui-bóng講,chit ê美麗ê女士去hō͘ 7 ê邪靈附身,伊mā ûn-ná看有王子實在是1 ê有夠緣投ê少年家;伊chŏaⁿ面á hoán紅紅,ìn講:

Chit sî, Ông-chú í-keng sī ài--tio̍h khah chhám sí, un-jiû kā i ìn kóng: “Nā chún-kóng lí kan-na beh chim góa 1 ê, góa o.k..” Sui-bóng kóng, chit ê bí-lē ê lú-sū khì hō͘ 7 ê siâ-lêng hù-sin, i mā ûn-ná khòaⁿ-ū Ông-chú si̍t-chāi sī 1 ê ū-kàu iân-tâu ê siàu-liân-ke; i chŏaⁿ bīn-á hoán âng-âng, ìn kóng:

"That is neither here nor there: you must show me them, or death is your portion."

「He m̄是重點。

“He m̄ sī tiōng-tiám. Tiōng-tiám sī lí koat-tēng ài hō͘ góa khòaⁿ, nā bô lí to̍h chù-kai ài sí--ah.”

So the Prince went to his bed, sorrowful as before; but Jack put on the cap of knowledge and knew in a moment all he wanted to know.

Sòa--lòe王子to̍h kah進前kāng款,憂頭kat面去睏--ah;m̄-koh Jia̍k kā khiáu帽á tì--起-來,sûi to̍h koh知影伊想beh了解ê一切。

Sòa--lòe Ông-chú to̍h kah chìn-chêng kāng-khoán, iu-thâu-kat-bīn khì khùn--ah; m̄-koh Jia̍k kā khiáu bō-á tì--khí-lâi, sûi to̍h koh chai-iáⁿ i siūⁿ-beh liáu-kái ê it-chhè.

Thus when, in the dead of the night, the beauteous lady called on her familiar spirit to take her to Lucifer himself, Jack in his coat of darkness and his shoes of swiftness was there before her.

Só͘-pái, to̍h tī mê-chhim lâng siaⁿ tn̄g, hit ê bí-lē ê lú-sū tiàu-hoàn i se̍k-sāi ê siâ-lêng chhōa i khì chhōe Lú-so̍h-fò ê sî-chūn, Jia̍k kā i ê ún-sin hiû-á kah kín-mé su-lí-pah chhēng--khí-lâi, chá i 1 kha-pō͘ kàu ūi.

"Thou hast betrayed me once," said the beauteous lady to Lucifer, frowning, "by letting go my handkerchief. Now will I give thee something none can steal, and so best the Prince, King's son though he be."

Taⁿ,我beh交帶1項無人ē-tàng偷the̍h ê物件hō͘--你,án-ne我to̍h ē-tàng贏hit ê王子,to̍h算講伊是王ê kiáⁿ mā kāng款。」

Bí-lē ê lú-sū ba̍k-thâu kat-kat kā Lú-so̍h-fò kóng: “Lí í-keng ko͘-hū góa 1 piàn--ah, kā góa ê chhiú-kin-á pàng kah ho͘ bô--khì. Taⁿ, góa beh kau-tài 1 hāng bô-lâng ē-tàng thau the̍h ê mi̍h-kiāⁿ hō͘--lí, án-ne góa to̍h ē-tàng iâⁿ hit ê Ông-chú, to̍h sǹg-kóng i sī Ông ê kiáⁿ mā kāng-khoán.”

With that she kissed the loathly demon full on the lips, and left him. Whereupon Jack with one blow of the rusty sword of strength cut off Lucifer's head, and, hiding it under his coat of darkness, brought it back to his master.

來,伊to̍h對hit隻顧人怨ê惡魔ê嘴唇chhân-chhân ka chim--落-去,人to̍h離開。Ah Jia̍k chŏaⁿ用hit支seⁿ-sian-liù-phí ê大力劍,1 ē to̍h kā Lú-so̍h-fò ê頭phut--落-來,chhàng tī伊ê隱身裘á內底,the̍h轉去hō͘伊ê主人。

Lâi, i to̍h tùi hit chiah kò͘-lâng-oàn ê ok-mô͘ ê chhùi-tûn chhân-chhân ka chim--lo̍h-khì, lâng to̍h lī-khui. Ah Jia̍k chŏaⁿ iōng hit ki seⁿ-sian-liù-phí ê tāi-le̍k kiàm, 1-ē to̍h kā Lú-so̍h-fò ê thâu phut--lo̍h-lâi, chhàng tī i ê ún-sin hiû-á lāi-té, the̍h tńg-khì ho͘ i ê chú-lâng.

Thus next morning when the beauteous lady, with malice in her beautiful eyes, asked the Prince to show her the lips she had last kissed, he pulled out the demon's head by the horns. On that the seven devils, which possessed the poor lady, gave seven dreadful shrieks and left her. Thus the enchantment being broken, she appeared in all her perfect beauty and goodness.

Keh-kang chái-khí, bí-lē ê lú-sū bê-lâng ê ba̍k-chiu gán-sîn tài pháiⁿ-ì, iau-kiû Ông-chú ài ho͘ i khòaⁿ i siāng-bóe-á chim ê chhùi-tûn ê sî, Ông-chú to̍h chhiú la̍k ok-mô͘ ê kak kā thâu giú--chhut-lâi. Koh-lâi, hù-sin tī lú-sū seng-khu téng ê 7 ê siâ-lêng, ki 7 siaⁿ khióng-pò͘ ê siaⁿ liáu-āu to̍h lī-khui--i. Chū án-ne sǹg chè-soah--ah, i koh piàn tńg-khì i pún-té cha̍p-chn̂g ê bí-māu kah un-sûn.

So she and the Prince were married the very next morning. After which they journeyed back to the court of King Arthur, where Jack the Giant-Killer, for his many exploits, was made one of the Knights of the Round Table.

To̍h án-ne,翻轉工早起伊kah王子2人to̍h成親。

To̍h án-ne, hoan-tńg-kang chái-khí i kah Ông-chú 2 lâng to̍h sêng-chhin. Liáu-āu, in chò-hóe tńg-khì Ông Á-sò ê ông-kiong, ah lán ê Kū-jîn Sat-chhiú Jia̍k, in-ūi i chē-chē ê kong-lô, to̍h khì hông hong chò kî-tiong 1 ūi Îⁿ-toh Bú-sū--ā.
