LAZY JACK

Once upon a time there was a boy whose name was Jack, and he lived with his mother on a common. They were very poor, and the old woman got her living by spinning, but Jack was so lazy that he would do nothing but bask in the sun in the hot weather, and sit by the corner of the hearth in the winter-time. So they called him Lazy Jack. His mother could not get him to do anything for her, and at last told him, one Monday, that if he did not begin to work for his porridge she would turn him out to get his living as he could.

貧惰Jia̍k

古早古早,有1 ê cha-po͘ gín-á,伊ê名號做Jia̍k,伊kah in老母tòa tī 1塊公地。In sàn kah beh hō͘鬼扛--去,chit ê老chŏ͘人是靠紡紗á teh過日,m̄-koh Jia̍k實在是有夠pân-tōaⁿ,伊熱天to̍h去曝日,寒--人to̍h坐tī壁爐邊角--á ê所在,其他--ê伊siáⁿ to bē-giàn做。Só͘-pái人to̍h lóng叫伊Pân-tōaⁿ Jia̍k。In老母無才調叫伊去ka tàu做任何tāi-chì,最後,to̍h tī 1 ê禮拜一ka講,伊nā m̄開始為伊ka-tī食ê moâi做khang-khòe,to̍h beh ka趕--出-去,叫伊食ka-tī。

Pân-tōaⁿ Jia̍k

Kó͘-chá kó͘-chá, ū 1 ê cha-po͘ gín-á, i ê miâ hō-chò Jia̍k, i kah in lāu-bú tòa tī 1 tè kong-tē. This roused Jack, and he went out and hired himself for the next day to a neighbouring farmer for a penny; but as he was coming home, never having had any money before, he lost it in passing over a brook.

"You stupid boy," said his mother, "you should have put it in your pocket."

"I'll do so another time," replied Jack.

Chia ê話bē輸hō͘ Jia̍k精神--khài,伊翻轉工to̍h出去kā厝邊ê做穡人tàu做khang-khòe,趁tio̍h 1-sián錢。M̄-koh伊從來to m̄-bat袋過錢,só͘-pái to̍h tī伊beh轉厝ê時,經過溪á to̍h kā錢phah-ka-la̍uh--去-ah。

「你chit ê戇gín-á,你èng-kai ài kā錢袋去lak袋á。」 In老母án-ne講。

Jia̍k ìn講:「Án-ne我後遍to̍h ē-hiáu--ah。」

Chia ê ōe bē-su hō͘ Jia̍k cheng-sîn--khài, i hoan-tńg-kang to̍h chhut-khì kā chhù-piⁿ ê choh-sit-lâng tàu chò khang-khòe, thàn tio̍h 1-sián chîⁿ. M̄-koh i chiông-lâi to m̄-bat tē kòe chîⁿ, só͘-pái to̍h tī i beh tńg-chhù ê sî, keng-kòe khe-á to̍h kā chîⁿ phah-ka-la̍uh--khì-ah.

“Lí chit ê gōng gín-á, lí èng-kai ài kā chîⁿ tē khì lak-tē-á.” In lāu-bú án-ne kóng.

Jia̍k ìn kóng: “Án-ne góa āu-piàn to̍h ē-hiáu--ah.”

Well, the next day, Jack went out again and hired himself to a cowkeeper, who gave him a jar of milk for his day's work. Jack took the jar and put it into the large pocket of his jacket, spilling it all, long before he got home.

"Dear me!" said the old woman; "you should have carried it on your head."

"I'll do so another time," said Jack.

來隔工Jia̍k to̍h koh出去kā 1 ê飼牛--ê tàu做穡,飼牛--ê to̍h hō͘伊1甕牛奶當做伊hit日ê工錢。Jia̍k to̍h kā甕á接--過-來,袋入去伊外套ê大lak袋á--ni̍h,ná行ná sìm,牛奶早to̍h tī轉厝ê路--ni̍h choat kah chhun無半滴。

「僥倖--o͘h!你m̄-to̍h ài kā牛奶thèⁿ tī頭殼頂。」老chŏ͘人án-ne ka講。

Jia̍k ìn講:「Án-ne我後遍to̍h ē-hiáu--ah。」

Lâi keh-kang Jia̍k to̍h koh chhut-khì kā 1 ê chhī-gû--ê tàu choh-sit, chhī-gû--ê to̍h hō͘ i 1 àng gû-leng tòng-chò i hit ji̍t ê kang-chîⁿ. “Hiau-hēng--o͘h! Lí m̄-to̍h ài kā gû-leng thèⁿ tī thâu-khak téng.” Lāu chŏ͘-lâng án-ne ka kóng.

Jia̍k ìn kóng: “Án-ne góa āu-piàn to̍h ē-hiáu--ah.”

So the following day, Jack hired himself again to a farmer, who agreed to give him a cream cheese for his services. In the evening Jack took the cheese, and went home with it on his head. By the time he got home the cheese was all spoilt, part of it being lost, and part matted with his hair.

"You stupid lout," said his mother, "you should have carried it very carefully in your hands."

"I'll do so another time," replied Jack.

Sòa--lòe隔轉工,Jia̍k koh去kā 1 ê作穡人tàu-saⁿ-kāng,作穡--ê講beh hō͘伊1塊khu-lí-muh chhì-suh做代價。到beh暗á ê時,Jia̍k kā chhì-suh the̍h--leh,to̍h khòe tī頭殼頂行轉去厝。

In老母án-ne ka講。

Jia̍k ìn講:「Án-ne我後遍to̍h ē-hiáu--ah。」

Sòa--lòe keh-tńg-kang, Jia̍k koh khì kā 1 ê choh-sit-lâng tàu-saⁿ-kāng, choh-sit--ê kóng beh hō͘ i 1 tè khu-lí-muh chhì-suh chò tāi-kè. Kàu beh-àm-á ê sî, Jia̍k kā chhì-suh the̍h--leh, to̍h khòe tī thâu-khak téng kiâⁿ tńg-khì chhù. I kàu chhù ê sî, chhì-suh lóng-chóng chhàu-sng--khì, ū 1-kóa-á í-keng lak bô--khì, 1-kóa-á sī kah i ê thâu-mo͘ kô͘ chò-hóe--ah.

Jia̍k ìn kóng: “Án-ne góa āu-piàn to̍h ē-hiáu--ah.”

Now the next day, Lazy Jack again went out, and hired himself to a baker, who would give him nothing for his work but a large tom-cat. Jack took the cat, and began carrying it very carefully in his hands, but in a short time pussy scratched him so much that he was compelled to let it go.

When he got home, his mother said to him, "You silly fellow, you should have tied it with a string, and dragged it along after you."

"I'll do so another time," said Jack.

Sòa--lòe隔工Pân-tōaⁿ Jia̍k koh出門去做khang-khòe--ah,chit遍伊是tī 1 ê做pháng ê師傅hia tàu做,人kan-na beh hō͘伊1隻大貓公。Jia̍k kā貓á接--過-來,好禮á kō͘雙手mo͘h--leh,m̄-koh過無jōa久,貓á to̍h kā伊jiàu kah大khang細li̍h,伊ko͘-put-chiong,mā kan-na ē-tàng kā貓á放ho͘走。

到厝ê時,in老母ka講:「你有夠飯桶neh,你應該to̍h ài用索á ka縛--leh,kā伊拖tī後壁行chiah tio̍h。」

Jia̍k ìn講:「Án-ne我後遍to̍h ē-hiáu--ah。」

Sòa--lòe keh-kang Pân-tōaⁿ Jia̍k koh chhut-mn̂g khì chò khang-khòe--ah, chit piàn i sī tī 1 ê chò pháng ê sai-hū hia tàu chò, lâng kan-na beh hō͘ i 1 chiah tōa niau-kang. Jia̍k kā niau-á chiap--kòe-lâi, hó-lé-á kō͘ siang-chhiú mo͘h--leh, m̄-koh kòe bô jōa kú, niau-á to̍h kā i jiàu kah tōa-khang-sè-li̍h, i ko͘-put-chiong, mā kan-na ē-tàng kā niau-á pàng ho͘ cháu.

Kàu chhù ê sî, in lāu-bú ka kóng: “Lí ū-kàu pn̄g-tháng neh, lí èng-kai to̍h ài iōng soh-á ka pa̍k--leh, kā i thoa tī āu-piah kiâⁿ chiah tio̍h.”

Jia̍k ìn kóng: “Án-ne góa āu-piàn to̍h ē-hiáu--ah.”

So on the following day, Jack hired himself to a butcher, who rewarded him by the handsome present of a shoulder of mutton. Jack took the mutton, tied it with a string, and trailed it along after him in the dirt, so that by the time he had got home the meat was completely spoilt. His mother was this time quite out of patience with him, for the next day was Sunday, and she was obliged to do with cabbage for her dinner.

"You ninney-hammer," said she to her son, "you should have carried it on your shoulder."

"I'll do so another time," replied Jack.

Koh翻轉工,Jia̍k去kā 1 ê thâi羊--ê tàu做工,thâi羊--ê hō͘伊1塊真優ê羊肩胛肉,當做伊ê報賞。Jia̍k kā羊肉the̍h--leh,to̍h the̍h索á kā肉縛--leh,tī伊ê kha-chhng後拖土leh行,só͘-pái,tī伊到厝ê時,kui塊肉lóng歹--去-ah。In老母chit遍已經對伊完全lóng無耐性--ah,因為隔轉工to̍h是禮拜,in老母無ta-tit-ôa,kan-na ē-tàng食高麗菜做暗頓。

「你chit ê thûi--哥,你應該是ài ka扛tī肩胛頭。」In老母án-ne ka講。

Jia̍k ìn講:「Án-ne我後遍to̍h ē-hiáu--ah。」

Koh hoan-tńg-kang, Jia̍k khì kā 1 ê thâi-iûⁿ--ê tàu chò-kang, thâi-iûⁿ--ê hō͘ i 1 tè chin iu ê iûⁿ keng-kah bah, tòng-chò i ê pò-siúⁿ. Jia̍k kā iûⁿ-bah the̍h--leh, to̍h the̍h soh-á kā bah pa̍k--leh, tī i ê kha-chhng āu thoa-thô͘ leh kiâⁿ, só͘-pái, tī i kàu chhù ê sî, kui tè bah lóng pháiⁿ--khì-ah. In lāu-bú chit piàn í-keng tùi i oân-choân lóng bô nāi-sèng--ah, in-ūi keh-tńg-kang to̍h sī lé-pài, in lāu-bú bô-ta-tit-ôa, kan-na ē-tàng chia̍h ko-lê-chhài chò àm-tǹg.

“Lí chit ê thûi--ko, lí èng-kai sī ài ka khǹg tī keng-kah-thâu.” In lāu-bú án-ne ka kóng.

Jia̍k ìn kóng: “Án-ne góa āu-piàn to̍h ē-hiáu--ah.”

Well, on the Monday, Lazy Jack went once more and hired himself to a cattle-keeper, who gave him a donkey for his trouble. Now though Jack was strong he found it hard to hoist the donkey on his shoulders, but at last he did it, and began walking home slowly with his prize. Now it so happened that in the course of his journey he passed a house where a rich man lived with his only daughter, a beautiful girl, who was deaf and dumb. And she had never laughed in her life, and the doctors said she would never speak till somebody made her laugh. So the father had given out that any man who made her laugh would receive her hand in marriage. Now this young lady happened to be looking out of the window when Jack was passing by with the donkey on his shoulders; and the poor beast with its legs sticking up in the air was kicking violently and heehawing with all its might. Well, the sight was so comical that she burst out into a great fit of laughter, and immediately recovered her speech and hearing. Her father was overjoyed, and fulfilled his promise by marrying her to Lazy Jack, who was thus made a rich gentleman. They lived in a large house, and Jack's mother lived with them in great happiness until she died.
