My dear store manager redefined my view of a supervisor – a supervisor is someone who fosters the growth of their subordinates, an angel guiding their advancement."

My second job landed me in a shoe store, where I worked as a salesperson, peddling shoes ranging from about 3,000 to 6,000 NT dollars, with the fancier boots going for as much as 20,000 NT dollars. It was at this store that I had the privilege of encountering two remarkable individuals who left an indelible mark on me. One of them is Xiaorou, as I've previously mentioned, and the other is our stunning store manager.

Now, let me paint a picture of our store manager for you. She's a charming and graceful beauty, with her long, wavy locks cascading down. Most of the time, she's a genuinely warm and friendly person, although she can be quite serious during important meetings. As for me, I've got my fair share of personality quirks, and I'm fully aware of them. Whenever the store phone would ring, it would send shivers down my spine, leaving me quaking with nervousness. I mean, how's a person who's afraid to answer the phone supposed to work as a salesperson? At times, I felt like I was on the brink of a societal pink slip.

Thankfully, I had a wonderfully patient store manager. She tried teaching me the ropes countless times, and yet, I'd still look bewildered. Her creative solutions included drafting a piece of paper with potential phone conversation phrases. I started by memorizing the phrases on that paper, which, at the very least, made me somewhat competent at handling phone calls.

Inside the store, there's a commission based on individual performance. Since I'm not really good at speaking and often stumble and feel awkward, introducing shoes is quite challenging for me. This has resulted in my performance being exceptionally low, and I'm almost hitting rock bottom. Fortunately, the store manager is very patient and has been teaching me slowly while providing me with many useful pieces of advice. She has truly been a great help and has helped me become a better person.

As for the store manager's voice, it was even softer than Xiaorou's, and sometimes, we'd head over to a karaoke joint together. These karaoke nights were few and far between in my life, but with them, I experienced genuine happiness. They had voices that were, quite frankly, pretty darn impressive!

But there was more to the store manager than that. She also took us on evening runs, where the refreshing breeze seemed to harmonize with the song of the night, almost as if the stars themselves joined our chorus.

In the grand scheme of things, I owe a debt of gratitude to these wonderful individuals. They helped me evolve from a rather gloomy and introverted soul to someone a bit less so – from an overly "gloomy" person to one with just a tinge of "gloomy" left, and a whole lot of happiness.

I'm currently a supervisor, and I've been emulating our store manager's behavior and communication style with the aim of helping new teachers grow and evolve into outstanding educators.

The nickname

I've actually given our store manager a nickname behind the scenes, and it's "Sophia." I chose this name because "Sophia" means "wisdom," and I truly see her as the embodiment of wisdom, inspiring people in our world.

The root "soph" denotes "wisdom" and comes from the Greek word "sophos," meaning wisdom. You can see this root in words like "philosophy," where "phil" (love) - "o" - "soph" (wisdom) translates to "the love of wisdom."

There's also a famous actress, Sophie Marceau, who carries this root in her name.

I guess I have a knack for giving nicknames, and this one just fits her perfectly!

Sophia

Sophie Marceau
