每日英語 #095: “Terminated” and “Made Redundant”

“Terminated” and “Made Redundant”

No one wants to lose their job, but it’s is a “fact of life” (something that happens in life). “To be terminated” is to lose your job, meaning that your company or boss tells you that you no longer have a job there, that you can no longer work there. “To be terminated” is a formal and official way of saying this. The more common and conversational phrase is “to be fired” from a job.

沒有人想失去工作,但這是“生活的事實”(生活中發生的事情)。“被終止”意味著失去工作,這意味著你的公司或老闆告訴你你不再有工作了,不能再繼續在那裡工作。“被終止”是一種正式且官方的說法。更常見且口語化的說法是“被解雇”。

In a job interview, you may be asked why you were terminated from your last job. If you lost your job because the company closed or reduced its “staff” (group of workers), you would use the term “to be laid off.” “To lay (someone) off” means to dismiss a worker, sometimes “temporarily” (for a short time), because there isn’t enough work; “to be laid off” means to lose your job for this reason. However, if you lose your job because of something bad that happened, then you were terminated or fired.

在面試中,你可能會被問到為什麼從上一份工作中被終止。如果你是因為公司倒閉或縮減“員工”(工作人員群體)而失去工作,你會使用“被裁員”這個詞。“裁員”意味著解雇一名工人,有時是“暫時”(短時間)解雇,因為工作量不夠;“被裁員”表示因為這個原因而失去工作。然而,如果你是因為發生了某些不好的事情而失去工作,那你就是被終止或被解雇了。

For example:

  • “There was a letter in her work file indicating that she was terminated for stealing.”
    “她的工作檔案中有一封信表明她因偷竊而被終止。”
  • “I was fired from my job because my boss didn’t like me.”
    “我被解雇了,因為我的老闆不喜歡我。”

In the U.S., we don’t use the term “to be made redundant.” It’s used in Britain and many Americans aren’t even familiar with this phrase. “Redundant” means that something is no longer needed or useful.

在美國,我們不使用“被多餘”這個詞。這個詞在英國使用,許多美國人甚至不熟悉這個詞。“多餘”意味著某物不再需要或有用。

We can use it this way:
我們可以這樣使用它:

  • “Now that we have computers to do that job, these workers have become redundant.”
    “既然我們有了可以完成這項工作的電腦,這些工人已經變得多餘了。”
  • “This student’s long essay is filled with redundant information and, in the end, only had one or two real ideas.”
    “這名學生的長篇論文充滿了多餘的資訊,最終只剩下了一兩個真正的想法。”

You’re probably familiar with the Terminator movies. One thing you’d never want is to be terminated by the Terminator. His job is to take away more than just your job!

你可能熟悉《終結者》電影。有一件事你永遠不想發生,那就是被終結者終結。他的工作不僅僅是剝奪你的工作!
