1942年生於瑞士，因為受到爺爺的薰陶，從小就與畫筆和色彩為伍。自瑞士比爾應用藝術學院畢業之後，他展開平面設計師的工作。1966年起他搬到法國巴黎，並在一次造訪倫敦的契機，見識了英國插畫的蓬勃發展，下定決心投身到插畫事業中。之後不久，他便開始與法國歷史悠久的出版社Gallimard Jeunesse長期的合作關係，出版多本與自然、生態相關的知識性繪本，廣受許多讀者喜愛。
他滿懷對自然萬物的熱情，投注於插畫創作。為了創作《大自然》系列，並精準呈現大自然的宏大和細節，他考察自然萬物、花草樹木、昆蟲鳥獸、晴陰雨雪，甚至天色雲彩的變化，積累眾多野外素描，拍攝大量照片揣摩，歷時多年才完成作品。2012年法國上塞納省總理事會更頒發青少年書籍獎「la science se livre」給他，肯定他為孩子創作出最為傑出的科普類書籍

René Mettler est né en 1942, en Suisse. Grâce à un grand-père héraldiste (un spécialiste des blasons et des armoiries) il est, dès son enfance, en contact avec les pinceaux et les couleurs. Jeune homme, il fréquente l'École des arts appliqués à Bienne, en Suisse, et devient graphiste.
Il s'installe à Paris en 1966, où il travaille comme directeur artistique pour un grand magasin et dans différentes agences de publicité. Puis il dirige les studios graphiques d'un grand cabinet de design.En 1971, à la suite d'un long séjour à Londres où il découvre l'illustration anglaise, il décide de se consacrer entièrement à l'illustration.
En 1985 commence une longue collaboration avec Gallimard Jeunesse pour qui il illustre de nombreux livres documentaires, notamment dans les collections «Mes Premières Découvertes», «Découverte Benjamin» et «Secrets». En 2012, le Conseil général des Hauts-de-Seine lui délivre le prix adolescent "la science se livre" organisé par le Conseil général des Hauts-de-Seine. Ce prix récompense les meilleurs ouvrages de vulgarisation scientifique par catégorie d'âge.
