愛因斯坦與哲學
愛因斯坦回想起自己的思路歷程時說，他1905年建立的狹義相對論，當中的關鍵是放棄時間的絕對性，也就是說兩件事件是否同時間發生並沒有單一客觀的答案，而是相對於不同的坐標。愛因斯坦認為自己能夠得出這個違反常理的念頭，很大程度上是受到 18 世紀哲學家休謨 （David Hume）和奧地利哲學與物理學家 Ernst Mach（1838-1916）所啟發，而尤其是以休謨的影響為重。[註1] 愛因斯坦雖然是一個物理學家，但卻閱讀過很多哲學著作，對休謨和康德等哲學家的理論有一定的認識。至於哲學為何會對物理學家有用，愛因斯坦曾經這樣寫：
我覺得今天有很多人 — 甚至專業科學家 — 好像一個見過數千顆樹，但從來沒有見過森林的人。歷史和哲學的背景知識，能使人獨立於大多數同一代科學家所犯的偏見。哲學洞察力所帶來的獨立性 — 我認為 — 可以用來區別一個人到底純粹是一個工匠或專家，還是一個真正的真理探求者。[註2]
專業訓練是社會分工合作的自然現象，但也可以令我們眼光狹窄。多些接觸哲學，能夠加強獨立思考，打破常規。哲學家尼采曾經說過，哲學家是炸藥，令身邊所有事物的都受到威脅。哲學的分析和批判精神，有時候看來好像很負面，但我們千萬不要低估哲學破舊立新的創造力。
