Mayweather's Defense Skills - Shoulders Are the Key
Referee: Never seen anything like this before! [Boxing Match]
Take a close look at Saul Alvarez's moves; he got a lesson from Mayweather earlier (check the video at 2:53).
At that moment, Saul Alvarez might be thinking: he's younger, stronger than Mayweather, how could he lose?
But Mayweather is way slicker than the younger Saul Alvarez. It's pretty tough for Saul Alvarez to land a hit on Mayweather.
Now, look at Mayweather's moves. His defense game is top-notch, using shoulders for protection. His shoulders make opponent punches seem further away or make them miss, reducing the impact. Even if a punch connects with the head, Mayweather can handle it.
It's like a one-sided match where he hits you, and you can't touch his head. By the way, traditional martial arts also have a lot of shoulder training, but we don't see much of that in real combat practice (too risky).
P.S. Like in Baguazhang, there's stance training that involves shoulder exercises.
Nowadays, traditional martial arts competitions care more about fancy moves, unlike the past where practicality was the focus. So, martial artists today might look good but struggle in real fights – they know the routines but get beat up in actual brawls!
But practicing traditional martial arts doesn't mean you can't throw down; you just need special training in spatial awareness, reaction time, footwork, defense, breath control, and more.
The Unexpected Punch Check around 3:53 in the video, Amir Iqbal Khan's punch – Alvarez's fist suddenly pops up from outside his field of vision.
This kind of punch is the scariest. Sometimes, losing is all about these surprise punches (blocking them really depends on experience, predicting your opponent's moves).
The terror comes from realizing you got hit only when you're on the ground.
Oh! I got punched! And Khan's situation is worse; he took a solid punch (fortunately, I haven't had it that bad, and in friendly sparring, we all hold back quite a bit).
The Most Dangerous Moment The riskiest time is after throwing a punch.
Coaches say pulling back your fist should be faster than throwing it – that's the deal.
After throwing a punch, tighten that chin to prevent your head from shaking.
Once, I got hit but bit down hard, everything was fine; I could keep going without my head shaking.
Another time, I unexpectedly got hit in the face, felt dizzy because my head shook.
Counterpunches can mess you up big time.
The following punch is terrifying, leaves a bunch of lasting effects (physical and mental).
Defense is crucial; leaving openings during or after an attack makes you vulnerable to counterattacks.
In the video, the guy in the green outfit didn't get back to a defensive stance after attacking. When he was about to throw the next punch, he suddenly got hit by an unexpected punch (check around 8:35 in the video).
Getting hit by an unexpected punch is terrifying. The guy in green was still throwing punches when he got hit unexpectedly, and it was a heavy punch.
This situation is extremely, extremely, extremely dangerous.
Without conscious awareness and a body response, there's a sudden feeling of disconnection, like a memory suddenly missing. This condition is the most dangerous – there will be a lot of aftereffects (both physically and mentally). I've never felt this way in practice or sparring.
The only time I felt something similar was after a scooter accident when I was hit from behind while going straight on a green light. I flew backward, had a moment of consciousness loss, and when I regained consciousness and tried to stand up, I couldn't.
Luckily, the vehicle behind me braked in time and didn't run me over.
I'm still alive! I got taken to a hospital by an ambulance. After X-rays, my legs weren't broken, but the scooter who hit me had a broken leg.
I, on the other hand, had a coccyx injury and had to go through rehab for a long time = =!
