In a forgotten corridor between the walls of time, Jane worked as the Smile Forger.
Her job was peculiar: she collected the remnants of joy from fractured memories—those fleeting moments that once lit up a room and vanished before they could be remembered. Jane wandered through mental debris, brushing dust off old giggles, salvaging smirks embedded in faded dreams, and polishing laughter left behind by those who had long since forgotten how to smile.
Each morning, she chose one forgotten smile to restore. She would trace its edges with invisible ink, refine the curvature with her memory-sculpting hands, and gently breathe life back into its dimmed warmth. She knew which smiles could mend a broken morning, which ones could silence loneliness, and which were too damaged to resurrect.
But one evening, Jane encountered a smile too powerful to forge. It belonged to someone who had given joy selflessly to others yet had none left for herself. The smile shimmered through layers of sorrow, resilient but deeply hidden. Jane hesitated. She couldn't remake it—only return it.
So, she stepped into the smile. It enveloped her like light through a veil. In that moment, Jane felt every joy it had ever offered—each one a thread woven into her own spirit. And from then on, Jane no longer forged smiles for others. She became the Guardian of the First Smile—protecting the source from which all joy, no matter how faint, still flowed.
