Small Talk

Wilson: "Excuse me, I couldn't help but notice you're here to light a lamp too. Is this your first time at Longshan Temple?"(不好意思,我忍不住注意到你也是來點光明燈的。

外國遊客: "Yes, it is! I've heard so much about this temple. It's really beautiful."(是的,沒錯!

Wilson: "It truly is. I'm Wilson, by the way. May I ask where you're from?"(確實很美。

外國遊客: "Nice to meet you, Wilson. I'm from Canada. I'm fascinated by the tradition of lighting lamps here."(很高興認識你,Wilson。

Wilson: "It's a meaningful tradition. Lighting a lamp is believed to bring good fortune and clarity to one's life. Do you know which deity you're going to pray to?"(這是一個很有意義的傳統。

外國遊客: "Oh, I'm not sure. There are so many deities here. Can you recommend one?"(哦,我不太確定。

Wilson:"Well, it depends on what you're hoping for. Some people come here for academic success, others for health or good fortune in their careers. What brings you to the temple today?"(嗯,這要看你希望祈求什麼。

Oh, I'm actually here more out of cultural interest. I'm fascinated by the architecture and the rituals. It's so different from what I'm used to back home."(哦,其實我來這裡更多是出於對文化的興趣。

Wilson:"That's great that you're interested in our culture! The architecture here is indeed special. Did you notice the intricate carvings on the pillars and roof?"(你對我們的文化感興趣真是太好了!

Yes, they're amazing! I've been trying to photograph them, but it's challenging to capture all the details."(是的,它們太神奇了!

Wilson:"I can imagine. The craftsmen who made these were true artists. You know, after lighting the lamp, many people like to explore the temple grounds. There's a beautiful garden in the back that's quite peaceful."(我能想像。

Oh, that sounds lovely. I'll definitely check it out. Do you come here often, Wilson?"(哦,聽起來很棒。

Wilson:"I try to come a few times a year, especially during important festivals. Speaking of which, if you're still in Taiwan next month, you should check out the Ghost Festival. It's quite a unique cultural experience."(我盡量每年來幾次,特別是在重要節日期間。

Ghost Festival? That sounds intriguing! Can you tell me more about it?"(中元節?

Wilson:"Of course! It's a time when we honor our ancestors. There are lots of interesting traditions and foods associated with it. I'd be happy to share more if you're interested."(當然可以!

Wilson:(注意到後面的外國人,友善地轉身) "Wow, this line is getting longer by the minute. First time experiencing a Taiwanese department store anniversary sale?"(哇,這隊伍每分鐘都在變長。

Yes, it's my first time. I've never seen anything like this before. Is it always this crowded?"(是的,這是我第一次。

Wilson:"Oh, you're in for a treat! Anniversary sales are like a national event here. It gets pretty crazy, but the deals are often worth it. I'm Wilson, by the way."(哦,你有好戲看了!

Nice to meet you, Wilson. I'm John from Australia. So, do you have a strategy for these sales?"(很高興認識你,Wilson。

Wilson:"Well, John, the key is to know what you want before you go in. I usually make a list and stick to it. Otherwise, it's easy to get carried away with all the discounts. Are you looking for anything specific?"(嗯,John,關鍵是在進去之前就要知道你想要什麼。

John:"I'm actually here to buy some gifts for my family back home. Any recommendations for uniquely Taiwanese items?"(我其實是來買些禮物帶回家送家人的。

Wilson:"Great idea! For unique Taiwanese gifts, I'd suggest looking for tea sets, pineapple cakes, or maybe some local fashion brands. Oh, and don't miss the food section in the basement - they often have great deals on gourmet items."(好主意!

John:"Thanks for the tips! I'm a bit nervous about the crowd though.

Wilson:"Don't worry, it looks worse than it is. Taiwanese people are generally very polite, even in crowds. Just stay calm and go with the flow. And if you need any help with translations or finding your way around, feel free to ask me."(別擔心,看起來比實際情況糟。

John:"That's very kind of you, Wilson. I feel much better now. So, do these sales happen often?"(你真是太好了,Wilson。

Wilson:"The big ones like this are usually twice a year - once in spring and once in fall. But there are smaller sales throughout the year. If you're into shopping, Taiwan is definitely a paradise!"(像這樣的大型特賣通常一年兩次——春季一次,秋季一次。
