Dichter, (toneel)schrijver en Nobelprijswinnaar Derek Walcott (1930) is een zoon van de Caraïben, meer specifiek van het eiland St. Lucia. Zijn werk is doordrenkt van de schoonheid van het eiland en haar inwoners. De toekenning van de Nobelprijs werd dan ook door velen gezien als een erkenning van Creoolse en Caraïbische culturen. 

Filmmaker Ida Does, die eerder films maakte over prominente Surinamers Anton de Kom en Henri Frans de Ziel, alias Trefossa, stelde een zorgvuldig en intiem portret samen over ‘het jongetje van St. Lucia’. Zijn studio, geboortehuis en huidige huis op het eiland vormen het decor waarin vrienden, familie en medewerkers openhartig praten over Walcott. 
De bewogen toespraak die hij in 1992 hield bij het in ontvangst nemen van de Nobelprijs loopt als een rode draad door de film. Maar de echte hoofdpersoon van de film is natuurlijk de poëzie, de kunst en het belang daarvan voor elke gemeenschap: ‘Poëzie is een eiland dat zich vrijmaakt van het vasteland.’

Poet, playwright, author and Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott (1930) is a Caribbean son from St. Lucia. His work embodies the beauty of the island and its inhabitants. The awarding of the Nobel Prize was seen by many as recognition for Creole and Caribbean cultures. 

Filmmaker Ida Does, who previously shot films about the prominent Surinamese Anton de Kom and Henri Frans de Ziel, alias Trefossa, composed a careful, intimate portrait of the boy from St. Lucia. His studio, his current home and the house where he was born are the backdrop for open-hearted interviews with friends, family and staff. 
The moving speech he delivered in 1992 upon receipt of the Nobel Prize is a recurring theme in the film. However, its true lead is of course the poetry, the art and their importance for every community: ‘Poetry is an island that breaks away from the main.’
