From 1/5 to 1/7 this year, I participated in the Art Future Hotel Expo hosted by Dayuan Art. During the exhibition, I directly faced the market and the audience, which also stimulated my questions and imagination about image collection. Therefore, we have sorted out a few key issues to share with you.
Why do people collect images when digital is so popular now?
Because photography isn't just about pressing the shutter. A great photograph is the result of a combination of light, tone, atmosphere, subject matter, content or concept. Therefore, the same tool can still produce different works in the hands of different people, and therefore can be regarded as an independent language, and then cultivate their own circle of like-minded people.
The speed of image production is unprecedented, is there still value in collecting images?
I think that at the current rate of image production, there are many more opportunities to produce good works than in the days when there were only analogs. Especially now that photography technology is sophisticated, the quality of photographic works may be improved faster through the discussion of technology. Therefore, in proportion, once the number of good photographs increases, the collectible value of a photograph may indeed decrease. However, I think this phenomenon is inevitable because after all, it is a problem caused by quantity, so I think that the trend of photographic collecting in the future is likely to be based on early and hard-to-obtain images, or the collection of special technical achievements, or purely personal preferences. Raise prices with technical thresholds that are more difficult to digitize, unless it's really special.
As images become easier to obtain, should the price of photographs be lowered?
It is too convenient to get an image now. Most people think that if they know the method, they can make the same work. But such an idea underestimates the fact that there is a lot of uncertainty in photography. For example, pedestrians, lighting, weather, air cleanliness, color temperature, the state of the person being photographed, etc. So it's not so easy to get a good picture. Especially in terms of post-production, it requires long-term aesthetic literacy and training from creators to make wonderful images, so it is a bit unfair to decide that the price of photographic works should be lower than other media based on the low technical threshold.
What kind of images are worth collecting?
As I have answered above, I think it is possible to collect early and hard-to-obtain images, or the results of special techniques, or purely for personal preference. It has become more difficult to figure out the technical threshold to drive up the price, unless it is really special.
What is the value of printing?
I believe that the value of printing lies in finding the most suitable appearance of an image, so that there is a basis for the preservation of the image. Therefore, it is necessary to print out images that are worth saving.
How many editions should release for one work?
I think that every good image should be made a standard version as a standard for collection and reproduction. The number of later editions can be decided according to demand, but it is generally recommended that there should be no more than two editions
