(Life is a single-player game.)
(All real scorecards are internal.)
There is a line in The Almanack of Naval Ravikant that reshaped how I view achievement:
“Life is a single-player game.”
Naval isn't telling us to withdraw from society.
He is pointing out something more subtle and profound: Most of our suffering comes from treating life as a multiplayer competition.
For a long time, I did exactly that.
I believed certain accomplishments would make me appear more successful— a high foreign-language test score, an overseas assignment, a resume that looked impressive to others.
But in reality, I wasn't exploring myself.
I was chasing others.
Eventually, I realized something important:
The biggest problem with comparison is that it makes satisfaction impossible.
No matter the field, there will always be someone smarter, faster, or more privileged. When life becomes a race, your energy goes toward catching up— not toward pursuing what actually matters to you.
Naval writes:
“All real scorecards are internal.”
This helped me understand what I truly want: I want a life filled with learning and exploration—a life where there is always room to discover something new.
And to live that way, I must exit the multiplayer mindset and return to my own single-player game.
Real excellence isn't about running faster than others.
It's about moving closer, day by day, to the life you genuinely want to live.
If I stop chasing others, I will choose to pursue what feels important to me— not what the outside world tells me to value.
That is the beginning of the single-player game.
