In her notebooks, she never writes names. She records only traces: a curve that suggests departure, a symmetry that implies return. She believes that every environment carries a double image of itself—what it is, and what it almost became. Her work is to stand precisely between these two states.
At night, Jane reviews her notes and feels that she, too, has become layered. Her own memories blur with the spaces she has entered. She cannot always tell whether she is recalling her past or the past of a place. This does not frighten her. It confirms her suspicion that identity is not a solid surface, but a corridor.
She knows that one day she may not remember where she ends and the world begins. When that happens, she will not resist. To disappear into a structure is not to be lost, she thinks, but to be quietly distributed—like light settling into a room that no longer needs to be named.
