找那位捲大根雪茄的

壯漢過來，叫他用廚房的杯子打

一些令人想入非非的起司凝塊。

讓小姑娘穿平時的裙衫

遊蕩散漫，讓男孩子拿來

包在上個月報紙裡的鮮花。

且讓現實止於視線所及。

唯一的皇帝是冰淇淋皇帝。

從那缺了三支玻璃把手的

廉價木斗櫃，取出她曾繡上

扇尾鶇的那條床單

攤開來，好蓋住她的臉。

要是她粗硬的腳伸出，他們會

來向眾人展示她有多冰冷、麻木。

且讓燈燭洞照不再搖曳。

唯一的皇帝是冰淇淋皇帝。

瓦勒斯．史蒂文斯（Wallace Stevens, 1879–1955），美國著名現代詩人，生於賓州。曾入哈佛大學就讀，後遵父命，入紐約法學院，獲法學士學位，歷任律師、保險公司副總裁，閒暇時寫作。生前出版了八本詩集，1951年獲頒國家圖書獎，1955年以《詩全集》囊括國家圖書獎及普立茲獎。他的詩主知而富於象徵的玄祕，為佛洛斯特之外，二十世紀美國本土最傑出的詩人，影響覃子豪、羅青等臺灣現代詩人。〈冰淇淋皇帝〉為其名作，收錄於其第一本詩集Harmonium（1923）。

The Emperor of Ice-Cream

Call the roller of big cigars,

The muscular one, and bid him whip

In kitchen cups concupiscent curds.

Let the wenches dawdle in such dress

As they are used to wear, and let the boys

Bring flowers in last month's newspapers.

Let be be finale of seem.

The only emperor is the emperor of ice-cream.

Take from the dresser of deal,

Lacking the three glass knobs, that sheet

On which she embroidered fantails once

And spread it so as to cover her face.

If her horny feet protrude, they come

To show how cold she is, and dumb.

Let the lamp affix its beam.
