Background: The Fox Spirit Village (狐妖村) Hu Ji was the first companion Leshi encountered. She resides in the Fox Spirit Village. The fox beastmen of this village are actually not ordinary foxes, but Fox Spirits (Huli Jing). Their most prominent characteristic is the ability to mimic and shapeshift into other species. As their cultivation and spiritual power increase, the number of their tails grows, eventually reaching the legendary state of a Nine-Tailed Fox.
Hierarchy and Power in the Village Growth and Tails: Most children in the village possess one tail, while those with three tails are considered more advanced. Reaching six tails is a significant milestone, as individuals at this level typically hold high-ranking positions such as Village Chief or High Priest. The Nine-Tailed Elder: The Elder is the only Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit in the village. Having attained immortality through cultivation, the Elder lives as a secluded hermit, detached from the mortal world. The Peak of Intellect: As the intellectual pinnacle of this work, the Elder’s wisdom is a match for the human Yuma. Absolute Strength: In terms of raw power, the Elder's capabilities are rivaled only by the Dragon King's absolute martial force.
Hu Ji's True Power and Status In the village, Hu Ji’s public status is that of a six-tailed fox. She is known for her eccentric temperament and her singular focus on cultivation, showing no interest in power or politics. In reality, her true strength has already reached the eight-tailed level. She habitually hides her true power to avoid unnecessary trouble and unwanted attention. However, she cannot deceive the Nine-Tailed Elder, who sees through her disguise but remains silent—a gesture of silent mercy and understanding.
The Trial of the Eight Tails Legend has it that to transform from eight tails to nine, one must endure a suffering akin to a Heavenly Tribulation. It is a path of "success or death"—one either achieves immortality or perishes in the attempt. Hu Ji faintly senses that her own tribulation is approaching, yet the uncertainty of when it will strike fills her with a lingering sense of unease. Bond with Leshi Hu Ji was profoundly shocked when Leshi first transformed into a fox spirit, as he naturally possessed the spiritual power of three tails from the very start. This anomaly piqued her interest in "cultivating" and guiding him. Among all of Leshi’s companions, Hu Ji is the most powerful in the early stages of their journey; in the later stages, her strength is second only to the awakened Leshi.
The Elder's Vision and Hu Ji's Disguise The Elder's Non-Intervention: The Nine-Tailed Elder believes that once Hu Ji completes her transformation, she will eventually embrace the responsibilities meant for her. Therefore, he chooses not to interfere, allowing her to grow at her own pace. He knows that after she experiences the world and matures, she will return, fully understanding her divine destiny. Hidden Identity: When spending time with her companions, Hu Ji usually manifests only a single tail. She conceals her true nature as a Fox Spirit to avoid raising suspicion about her species, successfully passing herself off as an ordinary fox beastman.
The Heavenly Tribulation and the Final Stand The Tribulation of War: Hu Ji’s Heavenly Tribulation arrives in the form of the war launched by the Dragon King. To protect her companions from a relentless siege by the Dragon Clan, she shatters her self-imposed shackles, undergoing a mid-battle breakthrough to finally become a Nine-Tailed Fox. Her power becomes so formidable that the Dragon King is forced to intervene personally, defeating her only through sheer force to take Leshi away. The Fallen Pillar (Lone King Timeline): In the Lone King (孤王) timeline, despite her breakthrough, a newly ascended Hu Ji eventually succumbs to the overwhelming numbers of the enemy. As the final companion to fall, she is the last spiritual pillar supporting Leshi. The Seven Stars Judgment: Her death ignites the sixth star of the Seven Stars pattern on Leshi’s back. It is Leshi’s ultimate despair upon her loss that Kindles the seventh and final star. With the constellation complete, Leshi casts aside all hesitation and unleashes the Seven Stars Judgment to decide the fate of all.
The Enigma of Leshi To Hu Ji, Leshi is a complete anomaly—an "unknown organism" that defies all scientific logic. Even with her profound wisdom, she is unable to decipher his true nature. He is fundamentally different from a typical canine beastman; his soul appears to be a species she has never encountered before. As a result, Hu Ji often finds herself grappling with the inexplicable nature of his existence, leading her to observe and document his every "impossible" feat with a mixture of professional fascination and exasperation.
The Scientific Nightmare Furthermore, Leshi's incredible abilities and his "Null" (non-attribute) status make him impossible to detect or measure, which frequently gives Hu Ji a massive headache. Finding him completely beyond explanation, she can only conduct experiments while frantically scribbling in her notebook, documenting whatever mysterious new power he has just unleashed while constantly complaining, "What on earth even is this thing?!"
Academic Ambition and Growing Dread Scientific Curiosity: Initially, Hu Ji joins Leshi on his adventure purely out of intellectual curiosity. Her goal is to deconstruct the mysteries of this "unknown organism" so she can claim naming rights and publish her groundbreaking findings in the academic world. The Weight of Power: However, as the journey progresses and Leshi reveals more of his capabilities, Hu Ji’s excitement turns into a deep sense of unease. The Threat to Balance: She realizes that the power of the Beast King will inevitably attract the greed of ambitious tyrants. She understands that the struggle for such power could trigger a global war, and it would not be an exaggeration to say it could utterly shatter the balance of the world.
