Today, I’m going to introduce three kinds of leafy vegetables. 很多朋友一聽到《本草綱目》, Many people, when they hear Compendium of Materia Medica, 腦海裡浮現的都是那些乾乾的中藥材, immediately think of dried traditional herbs— 所以就會問我: so they often ask me: 「青菜這種日常食材,真的會出現在本草綱目裡嗎?」 “Do everyday vegetables like these really appear in the book?” The Compendium of Materia Medica records a huge variety of plants, 只要是植物、能入藥、有功效,就會被寫進去, and as long as a plant has medicinal value, it was included— 包括我們平常吃的青菜。 including the vegetables we eat every day. But because we all have this fixed impression of Chinese medicine— 覺得中藥一定是黑黑苦苦、味道特別的那種, that it must be dark, bitter, and with a strong smell— 所以不會想到青菜也算是「藥」。 we don’t usually think of vegetables as medicine. But from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, leafy greens are the perfect example of “medicine and food sharing the same origin.” The idea of medicine-food homology means: 👉 很多食物本來就具有藥性; 👉 many foods naturally carry medicinal properties; 👉 你平常吃的東西,就是在保養身體。 👉 and what you eat daily is already part of your self-care. Some people even tell me: 「我不喜歡喝中藥,所以只想吃西藥。」 “I don’t like Chinese herbal medicine, so I just take Western medicine.” But whether it’s Eastern or Western medicine, as long as it’s a medicine, there will always be potential side effects. Vegetables are different—they are food first, and the gentlest, most natural form of nourishment. Doctors always remind us to “eat a balanced diet,” 其實背後的意思就是: and the meaning behind that is: 吃得對、吃得夠,你每天都在吃最天然的中藥。 if you eat right and eat enough variety, you’re already taking natural medicine every day. So in this special series, 我們會帶大家看看: we’ll show you: 原來你每天吃的青菜, that the vegetables you eat daily 在《本草綱目》裡是怎麼記載的? are actually recorded in the Compendium of Materia Medica, 對身體又有哪些好處? and what benefits they bring to your health. And today, we’ll start with these three leafy greens.
Many friends ask me: “How should I take better care of my body?”
If you’re someone who doesn’t really like taking herbal medicine,
the simplest approach is this:
➡️ Eat more vegetables and fruits.
With a balanced intake of veggies and fruits every day,
most of your nutrients
including vitamins and phytonutrients,
can be supplied naturally.
⭐ So when do you actually need herbal medicine?
When you feel that:
“I eat pretty well, but something still feels imbalanced.”
Then you can:
➡️ Add a little mild herbal ingredient
➡️ Make a simple herbal tea ➡️ Just use it occasionally
You don’t need herbal medicine as a heavy daily supplement.
⭐ When should you visit a TCM doctor?
➡️ When you genuinely feel unwell and need gentle balancing.
TCM excels at gradual adjustment and gentle support.
This step is ideal for minor issues, mild discomfort, or chronic maintenance.
And when should you go to a Western medical doctor?
➡️ When the gentle approach of TCM is not resolving the symptoms,
or discomfort keeps coming back.
That’s when Western medicine steps in for clearer and more targeted treatment.
Start with daily food (vegetables & fruits)
If still lacking → add mild herbal support
If symptoms appear → go to TCM
If TCM can’t fix it → go to Western Medical
Let me add one more important point here.
🚨 If your symptoms come on suddenly and severely, you should NOT wait.
When something hits you suddenly and intensely,
and it’s clearly more serious than a minor cold or mild discomfort,
➡️ Do NOT wait for TCM to slowly adjust it.
➡️ Go directly to Western medicine or the ER.
For acute or major issues like these,
delaying treatment only increases the risk.
But if it’s not urgent, and just a minor issue — you CAN take your time.
If it’s a small issue or mild discomfort,
your body can handle it and symptoms aren’t worsening,
➡️ You can choose lifestyle adjustments.
➡️ More veggies
➡️ Better routines ➡️ A bit of gentle herbal support
Not everything requires rushing to a big hospital right away.
Sometimes when people rush to hospitals or clinics for small issues,
the outcome actually isn’t great.
Prevention is the best long-term health strategy.
If we start taking care of ourselves through daily habits,
keeping the body in a more balanced condition,
then when you do need medical help,
your body will recover faster and better.
To summarize:
🔹 Acute symptoms → Western medicine / ER (don’t delay)
🔹 Minor issues → Lifestyle adjustments / gentle TCM 🔹 Daily life → vegetables, balanced diet, good routines, prevention
