南島地鐵線的最後一站 (scroll down for English)

    Tree cafe

Hong Kong Stop by Stop:  South Horizons..  Last stop on the South Island MTR line!

The other day, I (Mama) went to South Horizons mobile library with R and spied a book called London Block by Block.  I really liked it and kept renewing it until they wouldn’t let me (sadly I didn’t manage to finish it).

Then one day I thought, wouldn’t it be nice to have a HK version?  So here is a map of our neighbourhood to organize my favourite things. Also see below for walking route guides.  One day I actually bumped into the tea lady at my old workplace and asked if she lived here.  She said “No, I’m just coming over from Shatin for a holiday day trip!”

Also, in case you haven’t guessed yet (judging by the topics of most of my posts), I work in infectious diseases, so now is the winter surge peak season.  I don’t know about you, but I need some light relief!

Ap Lei Chau Estate market - Fresh fish and Taiwanese fried chicken.  R kept eating all my fried oyster mushrooms when we went on Saturday!

Horizon plaza- Outlet shopping (including Lane Crawford), great for a girls’ day out.  Whiskers n paws is popular with our kids.  It’s a huge pet shop that has an outdoor dog park.  We like to joke that kids are like puppies.  So we just take them there to let off steam together with the dogs there (放蕃薯!)  It also has a café, though sadly no high chairs.

Another place I checked out this past weekend was Woodco, which sells local handmade candles. There was a sample sale on Sunday and I had fun sniffing different scents trying to pick one out. Originally I was looking for one that might relieve future colds, but since they didn't have any, I settled on a strong-smelling one (most of the scents are fruity or floral). Another nice aspect of Woodco is it's refill service. Save $, the environment and get a pretty candle when you use a pretty container!

Tree cafe is on the very top floor (28/F), inside a huge furniture store.  If you manage to get a window bar seat, you pretty much have an unrestricted sea view.

It has a room with kids furniture, we like to feed our kids there.  Their kid’s Spaghetti Bolognese is very delicious.  R orders it every time & I can never help snaffling some.  The lemon tart and chocolate fudge cake are pretty good too.  The beef lasagna is nice & hearty.

Italian international nursery and kindergarten- Italian immersion playgroups and preschool.  Newly opened and huge.  Very low student-teacher ratio for the Italian playgroups.  X very much enjoyed it.

Marina Square West Centre Organic beauty- Facials

South Horizons Residents Clubhouse- Dim sum and chinese food with a seaview.  A hidden gem:  You don’t need to be a resident to dine there!

    Walking routes:

    1.       Italian international nursery and kindergarten-> Horizon plaza

Start opposite Marina Square West centre, take the stairs or slope down to the seaside promenade to Italian international nursery and kindergarten, which is at the start of the promenade.  As you walk, you will see Aberdeen, Tin Wan, boats (big and small), container ships and sometimes ferries from Lamma Island.  There are playgrounds along the way (a favourite haunt of our kids).  As you walk further, you will see Lamma island and people fishing.  You can also catch the sunset.

The end of the promenade connects to a road which leads to Horizon plaza

Adult walking time:  30 minutes leisurely pace

    With kids:  Longer!

    2.      Ap Lei Chau Estate market -> Ap Lei Chau park

After years of construction, a lift has finally been constructed behind Ap Lei Chau Estate market, linking it to Ap Lei Chau park below, where you can easily walk to Lei Tung MTR station (to be covered in a future post!)  There is a waterfront promenade in Ap Lei Chau park, which is also a hit with the kids and also playgrounds.

Adult walking time: 10 minutes leisurely pace

    With kids:  Longer!
