"Finding Hope in Adversity: Insights from 'Notes on the Diamond Sutra by a Golden Sheep' by Hao Mingyi"
A book that has deeply resonated with me and profoundly influenced my life is Hao Mingyi's "Notes on the Diamond Sutra by a Golden Sheep". It has provided substantial help in dealing with setbacks, increasing tolerance, and adjusting my mood.
"Notes on the Diamond Sutra by a Golden Sheep" is a book where Hao Mingyi combines the wisdom of the Diamond Sutra with his personal life insights and practical experiences. Using vivid prose and real-life experiences, Hao Mingyi transforms the profound philosophy of the Diamond Sutra into practical life wisdom, benefiting readers immensely. The book cites the Sixth Patriarch's explanation of the Diamond Sutra:
Gold in the mountain, the mountain doesn't know it's a treasure, and the treasure doesn't know it's the mountain. Why? Because it has no inherent nature. People have inherent nature and use the treasure.
Upon meeting the master goldsmith, chiseling the mountain slope, extracting the ore, and refining it into fine gold, it can be used freely to escape poverty. Within the great body, the Buddha nature enhances you. The body symbolizes the world, ego symbolizes the mountain, troubles symbolize the ore, and Buddha nature symbolizes the gold.
Within the mine of troubles lies the treasure of Buddha nature. Within the treasure of Buddha nature is the wise craftsman, who uses the craftsman's chisel to break through the mountain of ego, seeing the ore of troubles, refining it with the fire of enlightenment, and seeing the clear and pure diamond Buddha nature. Thus, the diamond is used as a metaphor, giving it its name. Emptiness is not an action, clarity has no form, the meaning is easy to understand and practice, and both name and essence are complete. Without practice, one remains an ordinary person; with practice, one attains the wisdom of saints, hence the name Diamond Sutra.
This interpretation provides a deeper understanding of the Diamond Sutra.
In facing setbacks, the book teaches how to maintain a peaceful mindset when dealing with failure and challenges. A particularly memorable story in the book is about "Shackles and the Dragon-slaying Saber". In it, Hao Mingyi uses four shackles to restrain the sheep, named "prefer slow over fast", "prefer small over large", "prefer public over private", and "prefer waiting over seeking", spending ten years to tame the sheep. However, when he tried to let the sheep run free again, he found that one of the shackles couldn't be cut. Eventually, he found a combined weapon of the Yitian Sword and the Dragon-slaying Saber to break all the shackles. This story taught me that sometimes the limitations and constraints we place on ourselves need to be unlocked through inner awakening and appropriate opportunities to face setbacks and challenges.
The book introduces the concept of "dwelling nowhere and producing the mind," teaching how to find inner peace amidst a busy life. Whether through meditation or simple deep breathing, these methods help restore calm when feeling distressed or troubled, allowing me to face life's challenges anew.
"Notes on the Diamond Sutra by a Golden Sheep" is a source of enlightenment and stress relief. I hope it can offer you different insights and comfort as well.
