Specialist divers continue to search for six people missing, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of the Italian island of Sicily in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 56m vessel was carrying 22 people including 12 passengers and 10 crew. Fifteen people were rescued and six people missing. Rescue crews said they assume the missing six are in those cabins because the storm struck when most would be sleeping.

The yacht, named Bayesian, encountering a heavy storm overnight that caused waterspouts, or rotating columns of air, to appear over the sea. It is believed the ship was struck by a waterspout, and sank quickly.

The luxury sailboat was about 50 meters underwater that is far deeper than most recreational divers are certified for and a depth. Recovery crews could only stay for 12-minute shifts, a measure that slowed efforts to reach the inside of the wreck.

Divers tag-teamed the shifts and were using a remote-controlled underwater vehicle, to help in the search. They hadn’t been able to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by furniture that shifted during the ship was struck.
