[科技新聞學英文] 張忠謀先生說台積電有競爭力危機

這幾年大家都說台積電是台灣的「護國神山」

不過上個月在台積電內部的員工運動會張忠謀先生對員工致詞時有說：

台積電未來將會面臨更加激烈競爭的挑戰

所以我去看了 Taipei Times（台北時報）裡報導張忠謀先生對於台積電競爭力可能面臨危機的分享

Addressing employees at the company's annual sports day, Chang said globalization and free trade ¹are on the decline, which would ²lead to more countries ³competing with TSMC.

在台積電的年度運動會上向員工致辭時，張忠謀先生表示，全球化和自由貿易正在¹朝著不利的方向發展，這將²導致更多的國家與台積電³競爭。

   在這裡意思是全球化跟自由貿易的模式正在「衰退」、「往不利的局面走」

¹Potential competitors include the Japanese island of Kyushu, which has ²abundant water and power supplies, and Singapore, which ³is an ideal venue for pure-play wafer foundry operators,

台積電的¹潛在競爭對手包括日本九州島，該地擁有²豐富的水資源和電力供應，而新加坡對於純粹經營晶圓代工厰來說，³是一個理想的場所。

1. Potential competitors: 潛在競爭對手
   
2. abundant: 豐富的(資源)
   
3. 某地方 is an ideal venue for 某事: 某地方是適合某件事的場所
   

Other countries could also ¹enter the market and become ²critical players, ³challenging the Taiwanese company's dominance.

其他國家也有可能¹進入市場，成為²關鍵參與者，³挑戰台灣公司的主導地位。

1. 誰 enter the market: 誰進入了(既有)市場
   
2. critical players: 關鍵參與者
   這裡意思是指其他國家也成為台積電的競爭對手
   
3. 某事 challenge 誰: 某事對誰造成了挑戰/威脅
   

Currently, TSMC ¹has more than 50 percent of the global pure-play foundry market and about 90 percent of ²high-end chips ³are produced in Taiwan.

目前，台積電在全球純晶圓代工市場¹擁有超過50%的市場，約有90%的²高端晶片³是在台灣生產的。

1. 誰 has XX percent of the market: 誰擁有多少占比的市場
   
2. high-end chips: 高端晶片
   高端晶片具有較高的運算能力和較複雜的功能，可用於先進的電子產品、人工智慧、圖像處理等領域

"With more rivals set to emerge over the next few years, TSMC is likely to ¹face more significant challenges than ever before," Chang said. "But I believe TSMC will be able to ²overcome the difficulties."

張忠謀先生表示：「在未來幾年，會有更多競爭對手出現，台積電可能要¹面對比以往任何時候都更嚴峻的挑戰。但我相信台積電將能夠²克服這些困難。」

1. 誰 face significant challenges: 誰要面對嚴峻挑戰
   這幾年產業環境變化快，讓很多公司都面臨巨大挑戰
   
2. overcome the difficulties: 克服困難
   

Chang cited TSMC's Open Innovation Platform (OIP), an ¹initiative to ²form an intellectual property (IP) alliance with its clients, as one of the ³advantages the chipmaker possesses.

張先生提到了台積電的「開放創新平台（OIP）」，這是一項與客戶²形成智慧財產（IP）聯盟的¹措施，被視為台積電擁有的³優勢之一。

1. initiative: 計畫、措施
   
2. form an alliance with 誰: 商業上拿來描述「不同公司之間的結盟合作」
   
3. advantages: 優勢/優點
   

Chang said that the platform aims to ¹allow TSMC and its partners to ²collaborate ³on an equal footing and share information and benefits.

張先生表示，這個平台的目標是¹讓台積電和其合作夥伴能夠³平等²合作，並且共享資訊和利益。

1. allow 誰 to 做某事: 讓誰可以去做某件事
   
2. to collaborate: 一起合作
   
3. on an equal footing: 在平等的狀態下
   這裡是說台積電跟他的客戶是站在同一陣線上，
   彼此像合作夥伴共同努力以獲取最佳的共同利益
   並非只是想從客戶身上賺到錢而已
   

He said TSMC ¹is keen to ²pour resources into research and development (R&D) and by doing more in R&D, TSMC can ³cut operating costs.

他表示TSMC¹熱衷於²投入資源進行研究和開發（R&D），並通過在研發方面更加投入，TSMC能夠³降低運作成本。

1. be keen to 做某事: 很熱衷／迫切地做某事
   指的是投注極大心力做一件事（可能是出於熱情或是被環境所逼）
   
2. 誰 pour resources into 某東西: 誰投入資源到某東西上面
   
3. cut ... costs: 減少..方面的成本（注意: 降低成本英文不是 "cost down" 喔！）
   

Chang also said that Taiwan and its semiconductor industry have an advantage — its engineers — ¹referring to the company's low ²employee turnover rate of only 4 to 5 percent per year.

張忠謀還表示，台灣及其半導體行業擁有一個優勢——即其工程師——¹指的是公司每年僅有4到5％的低²員工流動率。

1. refer to.. : 指的是.. (接著進一步解釋前面提到的東西)
   
2. employee turnover rate: 員工流動率
