「嘻哈」音樂劇
《漢密爾頓》有別於以往的音樂劇，運用大量的饒舌來訴說故事、推動劇情。雖然，在音樂劇裡運用饒舌，《漢密爾頓》並非首例，但如此大比例的使用(佔超過音樂劇的一半)，確實是十分罕見。
《漢密爾頓》的創作者：林-曼努爾·米蘭達 (Lin-Manuel Miranda)，他的其他音樂劇歌曲作品也常常運用了大量的饒舌，例如：《紐約高地 (In the Heights)》和《魔法滿屋 (Encanto)》。
美國國父與成就
亞歷山大·漢密爾頓 (Alexander Hamilton) 西元1755年出生於加勒比海地區的小島：尼維斯 (Nevis)。他在世時參加美國獨立戰爭、協助制訂美國憲法，也擔任了美國第一任的財政部長，一手奠定了美國財政系統的基石。目前10元美金鈔票上，印著的正是漢密爾頓的肖像。
漢密爾頓與喬治·華盛頓 (George Washington)、約翰·亞當斯 (John Adams)等人一樣，被後世尊稱為美國國父。然而，他的事蹟卻不像其他美國國父一樣，被那麼的廣為人知，歷史教材上關於他的事蹟的篇幅也比較少。
畢竟，跟華盛頓等人比起來，漢密爾頓比較不屬於在檯面上出風頭的人物，雖曾角逐過總統大位，卻未能獲選。然而，他對當時美國政治經濟的影響力，卻不容我們小覷。除了與約翰·亞當斯共同創建了聯邦黨 (Federalist Party) 以外，在當時的美國財政以及總統選舉等事件上，他都扮演著關鍵性的角色。
辛苦的早年生活
漢密爾頓早年生活，就如歌詞所描述的一樣，十分困苦。十五歲以前，父親離開了他的身邊、母親生了重病過世以及表哥自殺身亡等重大事件。然而，他卻沒有因此放棄人生，反而想辦法養活自己、充實自己，在貿易商中工作的同時也透過書籍自學。
在十七歲左右，一場強烈的颶風侵襲他所居住的小島。這時的他提起了筆開始寫作，形容這場暴風雨是一場「天神對人類虛華與狂妄的譴責 (divine rebuke to human vanity and pomposity)」。僅僅透過自學，文筆卻好得令人讚嘆，他所寫關於颶風的這個篇章，開始在當地廣為流傳，甚至還驚艷了地方仕紳，出錢幫助漢密爾頓前往紐約接受教育。
漢密爾頓的成長歷程，雖然乍聽之下貧窮小夥從谷底往上爬的勵志故事，但也不要忽略這些殘酷事件也在他內心所留下的陰影。在這齣音樂劇後續的曲目中，不只是歌頌他的豐功偉業，也細膩地描摹了這位國父內心的心理歷程與動力，甚至是黑暗面。雖然，音樂劇與史實會有相左的地方，仍不妨礙我們品味這個角色的故事，並也能從中獲得啟發。
