Beethoven's famous piece Moonlight Sonata wasn's called that at first.
Its real name is Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2.
Beethoven gave it a special subtitle: "Sonata quasi una fantasia," which means “almost like a fantasy.” This means the music sounds freer and more emotional than usual sonatas.
Beethoven wrote this piece in 1801 and it was shown to the public in 1802. It has three movements. The first one is slow, quiet, and dreamy. The second is short and light. The third is fast and full of strong emotions. Many people think the first movement sounds like moonlight on water, but that was not Beethoven’s idea at first.
The name Moonlight Sonata came years after Beethoven's death.
A German named Ludwig Rellstab listened to the first movement and said it reminded him of moonlight shining on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. People loved this image and started calling the piece “Moonlight Sonata.” Since then, the name has become more famous than Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor.
Beethoven wrote this sonata for a young woman, Giulietta Guicciardi, one of his piano students. She was 16 years old and from an upper-class family. Beethoven was around 31 at the time. He was deeply in love with her, but their love story didn't end happily. She later married another man. Even though their romance didn’t last, many people believe Beethoven’s strong feelings drove him to make this touching and powerful music.
