--- English Version 🌳 Buddha’s Bodhi Park Next, let’s take a walk to get to know who Buddha really is. 🌿 Strolling Along Culture Street So, let’s continue strolling along Culture Street and visit Buddha’s Bodhi Park. 🪑 Scenes in Bodhi Park Buddha was actually a real person—a historical figure. We’ve often thought of him as just a symbol of religion, but in fact, he is like a friend to us. Walking into Bodhi Park, seeing the Bodhi trees, the cushions, and the Bodhi Scripture House, you’ll realize that Buddha’s wisdom isn’t distant—it’s approachable and understandable. 🍵 Tea Time Sitting under the trees, feeling the sunlight and the breeze, sipping fragrant tea, you can slowly experience the calm.
English Version
Basically, Buddhism and Buddha’s teachings (Buddhology) are separate.
During Buddha’s time, he was in the stage of Buddha’s teachings. This was before the establishment of what we now call Buddhism. Buddhism as a formal system came later due to certain historical circumstances, and the scriptures created afterwards are what we now call the Buddhist Sutras.
In Buddha’s time, there were no written records; most teachings were passed down orally. That period is what we refer to as Buddha’s Bodhi Park.
Later, as history progressed, some people wrote down Buddha’s teachings and added content, which became the Buddhist Sutras. This is no longer the original oral transmission of Buddha. Therefore, we divide it into two parts:
- Buddha’s Bodhi Park — Oral teachings from Buddha’s time
- Bodhi Scripture House — Written sutras compiled by later generations
--- English Version Actually, many foreign scholars are very interested in Buddhology. Researchers from Europe and the U.S. study it carefully, but they are not practicing Buddhists. Buddhology and Buddhism are actually different. Buddhism is a religious system, while Buddhology is a field of study. There are no religious restrictions—anyone can understand and learn it. Before people truly understand, many assume that Buddhology is the same as Buddhism, but that is not the case. Buddhology is actually closer to our own lives—it’s more about understanding and exploring the mind. Today, we want to introduce this so everyone can recognize clearly: Buddhology and Buddhism are not the same thing. Buddhology is, in many ways, more like yourself than you might think.
Next week, we will gradually explore in detail: what is Buddhology and what is Buddhism.
Later, we will help everyone truly understand them step by step.
For now, there’s no need to go too deep. The goal is simply to give you a basic idea and let you know that they are different—and that’s enough.
