Australia Post is aware that fraudulent SMSs are being sent under the pretence that there are outstanding shipping costs to be paid. This SMS is not branded as Australia Post, however may be confused as being from Australia Post.
The SMS has a link to click to ‘track your package’ which is in no way related to Australia Post. The below example leads to a scam website as shown and shouldn't be trusted. The website requests you to ‘complete $1 shipping payment’ which will then ask for your banking information. Please do not provide your banking information – it’s how scammers can take money from your accounts.
Please note that Australia Post will never email or SMS you asking you to click on a link that asks for any of your personal or financial information, including any form of ID, passwords, credit card details and account information.
If you are in doubt about the authenticity of an email, SMS or a phone call, please delete immediately or hang up.
If you've sent any personal information to the scam email address and are worried that your identity has been stolen, please call ID CARE on 1300 432 273 as they provide free services to victims of identity theft.
