I walked into the classroom one day and greeted my students as usual.
"How are you doing?"
One of the boys, a first-year middle schooler, immediately started rambling about something that had happened at school that day.
"My teacher at school is so dumb!" he said, laughing like he’d just told the best joke ever.
Hearing that, I had to fight the urge to slam the desk and call him out right there. Instead, I took a deep breath and decided to hear him out.
"Oh? And why's that?" I asked, keeping my voice as calm as possible.
"Well, I brought my Bluetooth earbuds to school today to listen to music. Since my hair’s too short to hide them like the girls do, I used the hood on my jacket to cover them during class," he said, grinning with excitement.
“And then?” I asked, frowning as I fought the urge to blow up at him.
“Then my homeroom teacher came over and asked why I was wearing a hood in class. I told her I was cold, and she believed me and just walked away,” he said, smirking smugly.
“And why do you think your teacher was foolish?” I asked, fixing him with a cold stare.
“Because she actually believed I was cold!” he said, still oblivious to how ridiculous he sounded.
Hearing that, I wanted to lose it even more.
“So, your teacher trusted you, and you call her stupid? Last time, when you didn’t turn in your homework and said you forgot it at home, does that mean I’m an idiot for believing you too?” I asked, my voice sharp with irritation.
“...” He trailed off, finally realizing he might have said something wrong.
“Uh… , are you mad?” he asked, his tone suddenly timid.
That was it. I couldn’t hold back anymore. I let him have it.
“I’ve told you before—what I care about most is your character, followed by your habits. Now think carefully about the attitude behind what you just said.
Do you think you’re better than everyone else?
Do you feel proud of yourself for lying to people? How arrogant, clueless, and completely lacking in judgment do you have to be to say something like that?
Are you sure your teacher actually believed you?
Because I don’t think she did. Maybe she just didn’t want to deal with you or get into an argument.
Do you remember what you told me last time? You said you broke a classmate’s leg with a baseball bat! Do you really think your teachers want to confront you?
I was so frustrated I thought I might pass out.
I usually don't slam desks to scold students, but this time I couldn’t help myself. I gave it to him straight.
Once I calmed down, I asked him,“What kind of person do you want to be? And what kind of people do you want to be friends with?”
“I’m not really sure what kind of person I want to be, but I know I want you to approve of me. And I want to be friends with people who have good character,” he replied.
“What kind of person do you think I would approve of?” I asked, keeping my tone steady.
“Someone with good character, someone virtuous,” he said.
“Do you think you’re that kind of person?” I asked, looking him straight in the eye.
“Do you want me to be that kind of person?” He looked up at me, his expression softening.
“I think you will be,” I said calmly, giving him a reassuring look.
Thankfully, I’ve been teaching him since elementary school, so I’ve been an important figure in his life.
At least he still listens to me!
Phew!
Being a teacher isn’t as easy as it seems.
"How are you doing?"
