Part 1: Background Information (前情提要)
Taichung’s Hsiuping University held an esports event for vocational high school teams in central Taiwan. The city government said a team from Nantou County also joined. Officials believe esports is growing fast and helps students learn many skills like game planning and media design. The event was supported by universities and tech companies to give students real-world experience.
Part 2: The Dialogue (課文對話)
Person A: Do you believe esports could provide viable career paths for students?
Person B: Yes, I believe that eSports can offer viable career paths for students. For example, Korea is really invested in eSports development. They start training students in high school for eSports careers. As these students mature, the government provides them with financial support and career resources.
Person A: That's interesting! Do you think more countries should follow Korea's example in supporting esports from a young age?
Person B: I think it's a case-by-case situation. For eSports, it really comes down to talent. It largely depends on how fast you can react. Sometimes your brain's reaction speed can't be trained—it's just in your genes. However, some esports can be developed through training, like if the game relies heavily on strategy or mathematical skills, then those can definitely be improved. So if Korea identifies talented players early on by supporting young students entering esports careers, they can figure out who has natural fast reflexes and guide the others toward different career paths.
Person A: You're right, talent and skill development both play a role. Which esports games do you think require more strategy and planning?
Person B: For example, Age of Empires really requires a lot of strategy and planning. You need to think about how to build up your army, what crops to plant, and how to develop your economy. You don't need lightning-fast reflexes to win, but you do need to think strategically and plan ahead.
Person A: Age of Empires does require a lot of strategic thinking! Do you enjoy playing strategy games like this?
Person B: I don't play video games very often. But if I had to pick, I'd go with fast-paced games like League of Legends because strategy games like Age of Empires are really time-consuming. Fast-paced games only take a short while to finish.
Person A: League of Legends is very popular for quick, exciting matches! Do you have a favorite champion to play in the game?
Person B: I usually just stick with the free rotation the game provides. I'm not a hardcore player, I just play for fun, so I don't really spend money on champions.
Person A: That's a great way to enjoy the game without spending much! Do you have a favorite role to play, like support or jungle?
Person B: I usually play support because there's less pressure. Whether the team wins or loses doesn't really depend on your skill. You just need to support your ADC and help others so they can carry the game. So if the team wins, you're happy, and if the team loses, you're not the one taking the blame.
