接上週, 簡單而言, 中文大白話： 這個/那個≒形容詞子句, 就是/就是≒名詞子句.  中文的”就是”後面, 也常加上完整敍述, 類似英文的名詞子句. 如下例句所示(取材自紐約時報)：

一：主結構S+vt+o句型

 例句1：It certainly isn’t demonstrating that it believes you’re essential in the ways that matter most.

這當然並不能證明(就是)它相信你在最重要的方面是必不可少的

 A：it certainly isn’t demonstrating (s+vt) 這當然並不能證明

B：that it believes you’re essential in the ways that matter most. (就是)它相信你在最重要的方面是必不可少的 → (o為名詞子句)

例句2：I don’t know that anyone ever feels empowered to quit.

我不知道的(就是)否有人覺得自己有權離職

 A：I don’t know 我不知道的 (s+vt)

B：that anyone ever feels empowered to quit. (就是) 否有人覺得自己有權離職→ (o為名詞子句)

二：主結構S+vi+sc句型

例句3：The best thing you can do is what I suspect you’ve already started doing.

你能做的最好的事情就是我懷疑你已經開始做的事情

 A：The best thing you can do is (s+vi) → s = The best thing you can do, 你所能做的最好的事情

                B：what I suspect you’ve already started doing. 就是我懷疑你已經開始做的事情→ (sc為名詞子句)

例句4：Be specific about what you’re looking for. (祈使句, 主詞省略)

具體說明關於(就是)您要尋找的內容

 A：Be specific (s+vi) 具體說明

                  B：what you’re looking for. (就是)您要尋找的內容→ (sc為名詞子句)

三：承上週的這個/那個≒形容詞子句, 以下為更多生活化的這個/那個例句. 只不過在中文翻譯裏, 為求簡單扼要, 這個/那個被省略的情況居多. 如果要全部翻譯出來的話, 加一個”而”字, 顯得更中文化, 如下的括弧處.

3-1：You’re in a frustrating professional situation where you’re told you are valuable, but you aren’t treated as such.

你的職業處境令人沮喪，(而這個處境)別人告訴你你很有價值，但你卻沒有得到這樣的對待

3-2：it certainly isn’t demonstrating that it believes you’re essential in the ways that matter most.

這當然並不能表明它相信你在最重要的方面是必不可少的。→這當然並不能表明它相信你在某方面是必不可少的, (而這個某方面)是最重要的.

 3-3：Life is way too short to stay in a dead-end job that won’t even allow you to make ends meet.

生命太短暫了，不能繼續從事沒有出路的工作，(而這個工作)甚至無法維持收支平衡。

3-4：I am also the only one who knows how to do my specific role.

我也是唯一一個知道如何做好我的特定角色的人 → 我也是唯一一個人, (而這個人)知道如何做好我的特定角色的人
