十九世紀時源自於美國的slang，一開始是「hold your hosses」(hoss當時是horse在美國的slang)，1843年之後多次的印刷使得這個用法變得普遍起來。1939年「hold your horses」開始出現於Charlain(加拿大雜誌)上，算是比較舊時代的用法了。以下來看看例句：
