IELTS Speaking Part 2 + 3

Describe a time when you had a problem while using public transport. You should say:
what the problem was
when and where it happened
how you dealt with the problem
and explain how you felt about this experience.

I'd like to talk about ...

  1. A frustrating experience occurred on a cold winter morning during a bus commute, when the vehicle suddenly broke down on a busy superhighway.
  2. A delay due to heavy traffic on the highway suddenly turned into a much bigger problem when the express bus unexpectedly broke down. What was even more frustrating was that I was on that bus.

Q1: Do you think public transport should be free? Why or why not?

While the idea of free public transport is appealing, I don't believe it should be entirely free. Making public transport free could lead to overuse and potentially strain the system beyond its capacity. Moreover, the maintenance and improvement of public transport require substantial funding, which would be challenging to secure without fare revenue. In Taiwan, for instance, the Taipei Metro has been successful partly due to its sustainable financial model, which allows for continuous upgrades and expansions. That said, I do believe in making public transport more accessible through targeted subsidies. For example, Taiwan offers discounted fares for students, elderly, and low-income groups, which helps those who need it most without compromising the system's financial stability. This approach ensures that public transport remains affordable for vulnerable groups while maintaining the resources necessary for its operation and improvement. In conclusion, while public transport shouldn't be entirely free, implementing smart subsidy programs can strike a balance between accessibility and sustainability.

Q2: How does the quality of public transport affect the quality of life in a city?

The quality of public transport significantly impacts the overall quality of life in a city. Efficient public transportation reduces traffic congestion, which in turn decreases air pollution and improves the urban environment. It also saves time for commuters, allowing them to spend more time with family or on personal pursuits. In Taiwan, the Taipei Metro serves as an excellent example of how high-quality public transport can transform city life. Since its inauguration, it has not only eased traffic but also spurred economic development around its stations, creating vibrant communities. Moreover, reliable public transport promotes social equity by providing affordable mobility options for all citizens, regardless of their economic status. It enables better access to job opportunities, education, and healthcare facilities, thus enhancing the overall well-being of city residents. In conclusion, a well-functioning public transport system is crucial for creating livable, sustainable, and inclusive urban environments that significantly improve the quality of life for all citizens.
