怎樣應用?
我覺得在以上幾句句子裏,我比較推介大家學習一下第3,12和第15句:
- 第3句“off the radar”就是不在雷達範圍內的意思,如果不在雷達內,偵測不到,就不會知道,所以引申出來就是「不知道」,「不被發現」的意思
- His relationship in the office is so far off the radar. (他的辦公室戀情暫時未被發現。)
- The President thought that the malpractice was off the radar, until a local media reported it. (總統以為那不當行為沒有被發現,直至一家本地傳媒報道那事。)
- Covers 涵蓋 — 這個貌似簡單的字有甚麼好講的呢?看到Covers大家可能會想到蓋子,封面等,那是名詞的用法~用作動詞,就是「遮蓋」、「涵蓋」的意思。特別跟大家提及,是因為「涵蓋」和「遮蓋」是非常不同的意思,理解起上來就要特別注意上文下理呢!例如上一句例句,如果我們把report轉成cover,那麼傳媒究竟是把秘密遮蓋了還是報道了呢?相信大家能從上文下理差出來吧?
- The President thought that the malpractice was off the radar, until a local media covered it. (總統以為那不當行為沒有被發現,直至一家本地傳媒涵蓋(報道)那事。)
- Your new book should cover more of what the pervious one did not cover. (你的新書應該涵蓋更多上一本書沒有的內容。)
- 第3句“tunnel-like view”就是狹隘的看法的意思。如果直接翻譯的話,其實應該翻譯作「像隧道一樣的看法」,而像隧道一樣,這裏就理解成「狹隘」~大家也可以用「喻體-like」這個表達方法去更為生動地形容想要形容的,比如:
- I can't believe we have lived in that shoebox-like apartment for ten years! (我不能相信我們居然在那像鞋盒一樣狹小的公寓住了十年!)
- He drank that sewage-like drink without the slightest hesitation. (他毫不猶豫地喝下了那像污水的飲品。)
