Hey students!
After reflecting upon your past year achievements, misktakes, lessons you have learnt and old beliefs that get in your way , are you feeling all pumped and ready to start your 2022 afresh?!
Yes! it time for new year’s resolution/goals. By the way, from my past lessons, I found that many of my students thought resolution mean ( 解析度). Yes it certainly holds that meaning, but as you know, most of english words take on different meaning in different context ( 內容). I cannot stress this enough for my students: Please, please try and figure out the meaning of a word, a phrase, a sentence by 上看下看左看右看 method. 上看下看 = what is the writer trying to say as a whole ; 左看右看 = check the words/sentences before and after the word/sentences that you struggle to understand. Remember, you read or listen to understand the gist of the content, not to figure out the meaning of every single word. By using 上看下看左看右看 method, you will find it less frustrating and definitely more enjoyable to read and understand an english content. And this understanding can better help you to understand the real meaning of the word/phrase, such as the word “resolution” here should be understood as 決心 and not 解析度。
Another example that stresses the point I am making up there was:
- “Your room usually mirrors what is going on in your mind “
- “I look at myself in the mirror for about 100 times each day”
In sentence 1, the word “mirrors” should mean 反映出. And based on the sentence structure, it should be a verb and not a noun.
In sentence 2, the word “mirror” should mean 鏡子. And based on the word “the mirror”, it should be a noun here.
The above two sentences uses the method of 左看右看 to find out the real meaning of the word “mirror”.
That’s it from me and I’ll catch you guys later for more content on new year’s resolution :)
